Climate Change?

We keep fairly close tabs on our consumption of both fuel and other products needed to keep our medium twin flying safely, on going over our records I have found the following trends. {1} The quantity of ICE-EX and DE-ICEING fluids has increased three fold over the last four years. {2} We have diverted more times and missed approaches more times in these three years than the previous five years. {3} We have cancelled more flights in the last two years than the previous five years, normally due to Pireps of severe iceing, with a few zero braking action reports along with cross winds. {4} Our fairly new ice shields each side of the forward baggae doors will need replacing soon due to damage from the chunks of ice from the props. Now, here is my question, are we just unlucky or is this a trend that others are seeing? For the record most of our flying is in eastern Canada and the US, with a few trips to the Maritimes, we generally only see an ILS when we do divert, most of our approaches being non-precision. Maybe Im just getting more cautious as I age, but I suspect that climate change is the real culprit! Oh, almost forgot, we have diverted more times due to convective activity than I seem to remember, but dont have the number of times documented.Any one out there with coments?

i just finished a tour up in the barrens to the east of Yellowknife and north of the east end of the East Arm of Great Slave Lake. the locals were saying that typical temps for Yellowknife at this time of year are in the area of -20 to -30 C. when i left last week it was -6 C and fog was creating lots of issues with ice and viz (obviously) and likely a result of extensive open water on Great Slave Lake.

anecdotal, of course but it is what i saw and was told highly unusual.

Thanks for your prompt reply Fun Police, for this time of the year and your location those temps are truly amazing, do you have and ice protection on your blades? We had an R44 land on our ramp recently having flown in ice fog for about thirty miles, the landing was "interesting" to say the least. The pilot hasnt returned for it yet, most likely buying new underwear!

This year is an El Niño year, likely being the strongest on record. How El Niño relates to Climate Change is a matter of debate.

The next cooling phase (La Niña) is also predicted to be record breaking.

yes, ice was a problem for me. fortunately, we were winding down a job and so poor weather was not really as big a deal as it might have been. there were definitely a couple of occasions where our days were cut short due to icing on both the blades and the airframe.

i feel sorry for the 44 driver as that is a long way to go in ice but in the north with such short days and not much in the way of safe havens it is often the lesser of two evils.

hopefully he is buying new LONG underwear!

Over the last 11 Winters here in my manor, we have always had our first big dump of snow in early Dec. Dump as in 25-50cms that remains until mid-April. Daytime highs should now be between -5 to -10.

Current temps all month so far have been highs of +5, any snow that came has long since melted and none is forecast before Dec 17. So, yes, the start of this Winter has been unusually mild: at least a once-in-a-decade event.

Do I believe it is "climate change"? Well, only if El Nino is climate change and not a natural variation phenomenon. My bet BTW remains on the latter.

Also 2013/14 was the COLDEST Winter here ON RECORD. Feb 2015 was the COLDEST month ON RECORD. It was amusing how all the local fluffies immediately changed their wail-of-choice from 'Global Warming' to 'Climate Change'. Bless 'em! ;)

I'm just happy to pocket the snow-clearing savings and lower winter heating costs. If this is climate change, BRING IT  ON!!!

While I too am enjoying the winter-less commuting so far here in the Greater Hogtown Area, I am concerned about the lack of precipitation and its effect on next year's growing season.

I'm not too worried. 10,000 years ago CYZV was covered by 5000 feet of ice. In the 1970's the same gang who's now preaching Climate Change were calling it Global Cooling, and by the year 2000 we were all supposed to have frozen to death in the dark, because we'd reached peak oil and what little was left would be going for 200 bucks a barrel. When that proved to be bs, they changes the tune to Global Warming with everyone frying by 2020. Global Warming has been proven to be a bust so now it's Climate Change, like the climate hasn't changed in 4 billion years.

In 1987 I walked into the woods - on December 17th - wearing a pair of Hush Puppies and cut a Christmas ...errr...Festive Tree. By the 25th we had a foot of snow.

Just in case anyone's wondering what the recently signed Climate Change agreement is going to set you back take a peek at this, and that's just for electricity. (My bold)

The experience of Ontario, as underscored by the very timely report of its auditor general — released as the great Throng was chewing over these very questions — had to have been an inspiration and a comfort. For Ontario provides, as it were, a case-study of what happens to reason and policy when a government truly gives itself over to the new Meditations. Ontario as all the world knows went Green with fervour, with former premier Dalton McGuinty and his successor, Premier Kathleen Wynne, fancying themselves something of the Copernicus and Tycho Brahe of the New Green Learning. And was it not learned from the auditor general that their great dive into a solar and wind powered future has cost the innocent citizens of Ontario a mere $37 billion more than it should have, which could give rise to another, extra $133 billion by 2032?

If one wishes to learn the true value of what a commitment to the New Learning actually involved, then Ontario is both laboratory and experiment. By what fraction of a degree did the world’s temperature actually lower itself — was it 0.01 per cent, 0.001 per cent or any fractional mite in between? — for that $37 billion?

I agree wholeheartedly with pigboat.

We have been thoroughly duped by the greenies and leftist politicians on whatever they are calling it now...climate change?

And taxing the **** out of it is not going to make one iota of change to the climate...believe you me.

Climate Change

For those in the community that want to read a bit more I have found this report on "Wiki": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming
Probably a bit of help for the "doubting Thomas"
