Converting ICAO license into Transport Canada
 

Dear fellow PPRUNErs,

Since I'm in the middle of my immigration process to come to Canada, and it has always been my dream to fly in the great white north, I was wondering if there are some people who can clarify what are the minimum requirements for someone who holds an ICAO CPL and IR to convert it to TC license and how long would it take?
I have noticed in FAA they have something called VFR on Top, which we didn't have back where I trained, so are there any specific training one needs to do before being able to get a TC license?
What I'm more concerned is the time that it takes to complete it and would I be credited with my GR III instructor rating as well, and what are the minimum requirements I would need to fly in Canada before going for a test.

VFR-over-the-Top is only for Private Pilots without IA. It is automatically given to those with instrument rating or CPL.

You'll need a Canadian Medical Class 1, take CPL & IR written exams (CPAER, INRAT) as well as the practical exams.

You can prepare for the CPAER and INRAT written exams now (lots of materials online).

Assuming you've prepared for those written exams before you arrive, and have all your documents in order (logbooks, etc.), you can probably convert your license in just a week or two.

For your GR III, its more complicated -- you'll probably need to re-take some courses before issuance of a Canadian Class 4 rating. (Class 4 must instruct under supervision). TCCA or a flight school can help you out with the details.

I'm interested in doing the canadian ATPL with my foreign CPL my expereince is 2700 hours TT ,1800 on 737NG and 700 on 767.Do i need to convert my foreign CPL to a canadian one before i write the ATP?

I believe you can. Assuming you don't intend to reside in Canada, you'll likely need to get your foreign ICAO CPL and foreign medical validated, by getting a Foreign Licence Validation Certificate, then getting a Canadian Class 1 Medical.
