Air Canada crash in Halifax
Just saw on RT News that an Air Canada plane crash on the Runway at Halifax
AC 624 with 200 pax on board They d ont mention the aircraft type yet Anybody on this news |
320..all pax evacuated with minor injuries, only rumors of hitting a powerline followed by runway excursion. Glad everyone is ok

Slimy runway.
|
Think it did hit the power line. All flights here cancelled they say well get updates in 5 hours. (Passenger for a later flight here).
|
Talked some people who have been at the airport all night, the power did go out for a while.
|
It will be interesting to hear if the pilot followed a "proper" slope to the RWY or ducked under or whether perhaps wind shear played a role.
Also of interest is whether they hit that pole or wire causing the electrical black out in the area. And unlike what AC is calling it; "a runway excursion", I call this a crash. |
LOC or NDB approach only on 05, Looks like he landed short, clipped the power line and the berm at the threshold, skided on the belly all the way to B taxiway...Investigation will tell us Why....
|
Evansb, this was an " incident " ?
|
It seems non of you have looked at the pictures.......
Its a crash in any language. |
TSB reports aircraft landed 335 meters short of runway.

The aircraft in question was apparently not equipped with GPS so it could not do a RNAV (GNSS) approach to LPV minimums.
They would have used the LOC or LOC/DME approach (with no G/S) to RWY 05. They landed about 1100' short of the runway, most likely clipping the electrical wires, thus the subsequent power failure at the airport and surrounding area. Then the hit the ILS antenna/array and continued to slide along the runway. The gears came off at the first impact point and one of the engines ripped off at some point too. With those winds I wonder why RWY 32 was not used perhaps because of its snowy/icy condition. The initial press conference from Canadian TSB... Crash? What crash?
Multycpl,
Dear me, do my eyes deceive me? Surely you're not maligning the People's Airline?? In a press conference on Sunday, Air Canada's COO, Herr Klaus Goersch, spoke as follows (this is verbatim, a direct quote): The aircraft had a hard landing and has incurred some damage and is sitting at the end of the runway. [After] some hard landings the airplane can continue taxying to the gate. That was not the case here. Rockhound |
Its funny how on the Canada forum, this is barely being talked about.
You have to go to rumors and news to see any discussion. |

GMC 1500
Indeed, the usual "Big Red" types have been very quiet. |
Just what exactly would you expect them to say?

Good Evening J.O.
Although retired for 5 years, not flown the A-320 in ten years, not privy to the C.V.R. transcripts or Flight Data Acquisition Unit transcripts, not having the exact weather at the time of the incident, crew qualifications, crew duty day, aircraft related M.E.L. issues if any, field reports or NOTAMS for airport, fuel state as far as alternate is concerned, aircraft performance issues in spite of 23,000 hours flight experience and 42 years flying experience I will defer to the accident investigation experts to analyze the incident and write up their report. Anything else would be intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt but then again there are others who would consider trial by internet as to be factual as well as being expedient as their cognitive skills would be how I would say this delicately lacking in nature. Wait for the report to be published and if you can not, read the National Enquirer to find the answer that will be acceptable to your pedestrian thinking. |
A330 even though i agrees with your assessment I would also point out u are on PPRUNE!!! this is a rumour page.
