I'm sure the owners of those bags packed their computers in those bags as well....thinking they would be safe and sound in the overhead.

Why are so many bags getting "gate checked"?
Because there's no room on the aircraft for all the carry on.

Why is there so much carry on?
Because the airline charges $25 a bag to check it. :ugh:

FWIW at AC's gates in Boston (and other places probably, just not YYZ) there is a chute that gate checked bags descend gently into a bin.

The reason that so many bags have to be gate checked is that the Gate Agents aren't enforcing the number of carry-on's and the flights are almost, always full. Passengers aren't considering their fellow passengers when they bring 3 carryon's, with them and rush to get to the cabin, first to get the available bin space . The available underseat and overhead bin space, haven't changed.
Not sure what airline you're talking about charging $25 to checkin luggage, as Air Canada allows 1 free bag, can't say that about the US carriers.

LindbergB767 22nd Apr 2014 22:59

When you fly from Canada to USA with Air Canada there is no free baggage you pay 25 C for the First bag. I know since I flew with them last month to Atlanta
The airline today want to make money with everything....all of them are low cost, they reduce service, reduce space between seats, reduce salary of everybody ect ect
But the manager pay themselves nice bonus. What a corrupt system

I saw on the news today that the baggage handlers union is blaming Air Canada for the handlers dropping the bags.
I am sure there are plenty of factors to take into account of which Air Canada will be partially to blame. I am pretty sure though that they didn't say "please drop the cabin bags 20ft to the ground"!!

When loading gates first came in, most, if not all, were equipped with chutes for this very purpose, to try to carry bags down the narrow steep steps is bloody near impossible, so why has this feature been omitted from the "new and better" bridges at the centre of the universe? {AKA CYYZ} As for the twits who seem to think they are flying in a freighter, they should have these over sized bags checked before getting to the aircraft, as per the published conditions of travel.

RG500 23rd Apr 2014 13:30

I stand corrected, yes $25/bag on US flights and the first bag free on domestic flights. Again, matching what US carriers initiated. The available underseat room is slightly reduced to make room for the tv entertainment system components, which most US carriers have now installed. The seat pitch and available leg room haven't changed in years.
