US to Air Canada???
 

Hi!

I am a US citizen, and wanted to know what I would need to get the right to work in Canada ("Green Card") so I could apply to Air Canada.

I live in GRB. My wife is Canadian (YYZ). We are gettin Canadain citizenship for our kids soon (they will be dual).

Move to Canada
 

If your wife is Canadian it should be an easy process for you - she can sponsor you under the family sponsorship plan. I'm not sure if she can initiate the process without being resident in Canada. I suggest you read the rules carefully.

I brought my American wife to Canada a 2 years ago and it took about 11 months before she had all of the paperwork done so she could work in Canada. The conversion of your FAA License to Canadian should take less then 90 days and is just a paperwork shuffle with a 20 question test.

Be advised that when you start the process to enter Canada as an immigrant you will not be allowed to travel to Canada until all of your paperwork is done in the US. If you come to Canada first then apply from within Canada you will not be allowed to leave and reenter Canada during the process plus you will not be able to work in Canada during that time. Either will take you a good year to go through the process.

As for Air Canada and Toronto, good luck living on $37K the first year in YYZ.

Some of the advice above is not correct, it was at one time but things have changed fairly recently. Having applied for my wife's residency from abroad (and it just came through last week) I can clear a few things up.

First, your "sponsor" (your wife) does not have to be resident in Canada in order to apply. She just needs to show some sort of connection with Canada and an intention to move there with you when you get your residency. Secondly, you can travel to/from Canada when your application is being processed, this is your right to do so as a visitor.

There is a lot of paperwork and it's quite a minefield. I can see why some people have such a nightmare with it all. We paid a consultant to deal with it, they were recommended by a friend who had recently used them. Their website is www.russcanada.com. Its more expensive than doing it yourself, but you avoid all the hassle and the visa takes approximately 6 months to be processed. And it is unlikely you would have to do the interview which tends to be the bottleneck. Their website is a little hokey but I can assure you they really know what they are doing there. If you are really serious this is probably the best way of doing it, but it does cost more!

The immigration process is the least of your worries. Getting mixed up in the Canadian industry is not for the faint-hearted!

The time line for immigration to Canada differ from where you live and where you apply. Had I applied from the US while living there I would have had to send my application to Buffalo and it is now taking 18 to 24 months to have it processed there. We chose to move to Canada first then apply as "In country".( That is why she could not travel out of Canada) The whole process took 10 months from the day we sent in the application in June 06 to my wife getting her PR status in April 07 and was able to start to work.

Hire a lawyer to do the paperwork it cost about $1200 for all of the paperwork and we just came in to to sign papers and answer a few questions.

From FlightInfo, you seem quite high on Emirates, Northwest, and NetJets, among other. Now AC? You'll like Canada though, its a great place.
