Anybody to Harvs'Air in June?
Hi all - I am going to Harvs'Air in Steinbach in early June for hour-building.
Can anybody with recent experience of Manitoba recommend some "must-go" airports/airfields within, say, 2 hours flying time (at C152/PA 28 speed) of Steinbach South? A mix of commercial airports and GA airfields (and, possibly, Air Bases) would be ideal. Any hints? I know that nearby Winnipeg International try to accommodate GA approaches, commercial traffic permitting. Cheers  |
Try these -
Kenora (in Ontario but close to the Manitoba/Ontario border) Gimli, Manitoba Lac Du Bonnet (Manitoba) St. Andrews (just outside Winnipeg) Just a few to start. Have fun! |
Thanks for that! That's a start.
Cheers  |

As for places to visit round the place, quite a few little fields around the place within a 2 hour flight. Gimli's proximity to Lake Winnipeg can certainly be a nice (Google story of Gimli Glider). Not uncommon for us to see cross-country filghts to Morden (CJA3) and Winkler (CKZ7), both to the south-west of Winnipeg. You have to remember that west of Steinbach is prairie so visually, not much from flat-land and lakes. The flight to Kenora (CYQK) takes you over the Canadian Shield, which means rocks and lakes ;). Any other questions, ask away. |
If you go to Gimli, have a look at the Curtiss C-46 operation that's based there. Give you a chance to listen to the big round sound. :ok:
|
With Jerricho on this one re the flight plan:) ....don't forget Portage la Prairie (Southport) CYPG......

That's them, or at least one of 'em is, I forget which one. They also got CF-TPO from Buffalo Joe, and it should be up and running by now. There's a guy that used to work for me out there, and he says they have a pretty decent operation.

OK then, I'll go to Portage during a week-end...
Cheers  |
Actually, just to be a little on the pedantic side, Portage la Prairie and Southport are actually different airfields (the Portage airfield is north of the Trans-Canada Highway/Highway 1)
|
Portage
Sorry,
Have to stand by my original posting Jerricho ol bean,:} , Portage La Prairie ( Southport) CYPG .... but there IS a Portage La Prairie ( North ) CJZ2 |
I was only being a little on the pedantic side (it was more for Fouga's assistance)
Shouldn't you be working? :p |
Harvs
Will be Instructing there at the end of June.
|
flyndad,
look forward to speaking to ya :} |
Thanks for the ideas for NAV/hour-buiding in Manitoba/Ontario.
I flew to Lac du Bonnet (stunning setting!), Gimli (amazing DC-3s and C-46s!), St. Andrews, Brandon, Kenora (great scenery), Red Lake and a few others (Ear Falls, Altona, Winkler, Killarney, Steinbach North, etc). Morden's runway, though, was obstructed by vehicles (although I couldn't find any NOTAM mentioning runway maintenance there). Nice to have been able to do touch and goes at Winnipeg International (on a Flight Plan) and mix it with CRJs, Metros, etc. I thorougly enjoyed the experience - and the absence of landing fees (except very reasonable ones at Kenora). Cheers  |

If u need to test your adrenaline pumps, Atikokan municipal - short runway with a slope and a mine at the end waiting to swallow you up. the usual third stop for CPL qualifying xc flights to Thunder Bay.
You can use C152 C-GISI with long range tanks. I've done a few 4+hrs flights, someone did a lot of 5+hrs flight when i was at Steinbach. Lac Du Bonnet Kenora Gimli St Andrews Red Lake Thunder bay Regina, SK Dauphin, MB Brandon, MB Pine Dock, MB (beautiful gravel strip north of Gimli) Fort frances Piney Pine Creek, USA (if you r not a terrorist) Winnipeg, Obviously i used to enjoy getting chased around by A320s and 737s in my 152/172/Be95, credit to the professional ATC dudes at YWG, especially those two (?) guys with british accents, Jerricho is That U? I've forgotten the names of some other fields i'll check my logbbok and charts. |
Definitley not!!
Capt. Manuvar
Depends how you :ugh: define "british" i guess...but then all accents must sound that way.out here .....:) . Only one British here, not me or Jerricho. But thanks anyway :) |

Wherever there was ATC (Kenora, St Andrews, Brandon) it was of a very good standard. Climbing to 5,500' amsl made VFR dead-reckoning easier - the turning points and airports standing out from 15 nm away! Next thing was to get the "top of descent" right to end up at circuit altitude! Cheers  |
