Aviation Document Booklet (ADB) Expired

Hi Respected Members,

My friend who did his complete pilot training in Canada has his ADB expired.

It expired in August 2013.

Now he has been hired by the national carrier of his country and they want him to validate his CPL before he can do his Type Rating. Being current in flying is not a concern.

However there are two forms online on Transport Canada website.

One is the 'ADB Application' (for application of new ADB or renewal of ADB but 90 days prior to expiry) and the other form is the 'ADB Re-Issue' Form (For ADB that is lost, stolen or rendered illegible and need's a replacement as TC website says).
>Which one should he apply for?

>Also the C1 Medical expired on 1st April 2013. Does that mean he has to write the written test and do the Flight Test for CPL again?

Thanks in advance :-)

Use the ABD Application form (you can apply UP TO 90 days prior to expiry) but if its expired use this form anyway.

Regarding the medical, I believe that you will need an up to date medical to renew the licence.

canuck51,

I'm glad I perused this thread. I wasn't aware that the ADB had an expiry date! Luckily, I see mine expires in 2016. I've made a note in my calendar.

The whole ADB saga strikes me as bureaucratic stupidity. You can't fit your licence in your wallet anymore and it doesn't include your radio licence!

As an aside, when did they change the passport validity to 10 years?

So if that abortion that T.C. calls a license expires and you have a valid medical but the abortion expires and you just keep on flying what can they to you?

For that matter how will they even know you are flying?

Hello what is the delay in the printing for ADB in Canada? Anyone has any idea? Maybe an approx time it took to get the ADB renewed?

It took about 3 months to get mine. I have heard everything from Transport Canada understaffing, problems at the printer, but the common thread seems to be that a large backlog built up & it’s not clearing quickly.

Sent in Feb. 6, 2024, received April 23, 2024. You are, of course, aware of the “global” exemption/extension (NCR-023-2023) for everyone up to August 31, 2024?

Delays right now seem to depend on your region and date of submission. I submitted mine in January, got it back end of March. That's in PNR. Another friend, also in PNR, submitted in November and is still waiting. Two friends who submitted in Pacific region are still waiting, submitted December and February.

The global exemption exists, but it's on the pilot to make sure they're aware of the exemption and possibly carry it with them - this from a TC inspector who sat in our jump seat a few days ago. This is especially so if you're using the license overseas where they won't be aware of the exemption.

Be weary when you get your new ADB too. Most are coming without the medical sticker showing the last completed medical. You'll have to carry around your old license for a while to prove you have one. This would also apply if you recently received a new license or rating and you don't see the new sticker in your new ADB. You'll have to continue to show your temporary privileges in your old license booklet. Remember that those have a 90-day limit, and it's on you to chase TC.

These posts just reinforce my jaded view of the farcical ADB. What was the purpose? The old paper licence fitted in my wallet and didn't expire. My Kiwi licence is just a credit card sized plastic card.

Yup. And see you all in another 10 years when it happens all over again.

It seemed like the perfect government employee promotion project: change a system that was working quite well and where everyone had clear service expectations, and build a system that no other regulator uses under the guise of making the pilots license a passport. Then, you find out early on that no other country will recognize it, but rather than go back to the old system, you double down and reframe it as a better system. 10 years on the people involved have been promoted or retired and it is left to a new group to fix, who has half the budget and a third of the time. Hence why we have thinner booklets and staples in the seams.
