Pilot 'very lucky' in airstrip crash

EAST GWILLIMBURY -- A pilot walked away with only a scratch after his small plane crashed into an airstrip hangar yesterday. Workers at the Holland Landing Airpark scrambled for cover as the single-engine Cessna 182 suddenly veered towards them moments after take-off. "(The pilot) thinks between something going wrong with the plane and the wind coming up on him it took him off course," said Joe Kearns, an East Gwillimbury fire department district chief.
The pilot, who has 17 years flying experience, was smiling and seemed relaxed after the crash but refused to comment. "He's a very lucky man," Kearns said.
None of the airstrip workers were injured.
The pilot had just taken off from one of the airstrip's two runways when he lost control around 10:45 a.m., just missing some gas tanks on the airfield.
