Interesting report in this month's pilot magazine.

An off-duty f/a was on a US Air 737, and witnessed a wet start ie flames out the back of number 2 engine on startup.
On informing the duty f/a that there was an engine fire, the pax were immediately evacuated through the rear exits & slides.

Flight deck were completely unaware of any abnormalities until the ground staff told them that all their pax were on the tarmac!

But why the rear exits?

Someone I know at US tells me that it was a very cold day and they thought the pax would be warmer that way ;)

Boeing are to fit warning lights in cockpit to alert FD of any open/unsafe doors in future, can't believe no one thought of that before.

Centre-line Thrust...There has always been an indicator in the flight deck of the 737 which tells the tech crew if any of the doors are open. It is one of their pre departure checks to ensure that all the doors are closed.
