I've survived........
....My first week as cabin crew and i'm loving every second!!!! The days have been long though and it's very difficult to adjust to it all, but hopefully I will soon! Everyone has been looking after me really well and have helped me a lot which is good! I've been to loads of nice places and today I went to Madrid again and had half an hour to sit in the sun and watch all the mad drivers at the airport! Two suitcases were lying on the apron and the baggage handlers were just driving around them. We all cheered when finally someone stopped and picked them up!!! I hope the novelty doesn't wear off?!?!?!!!!!!

Who is it you work for BMI? I think the novelty will wear off sooner than the year is out.

Yes Green-eyedbabe I work for bmi mainline. All people tell me when I tell them i'm new is that oh bmi is going to the pits e.t.c and then go on to complain about all the long days. Yeah granted they are long, but to be honest You are never constantly working (apart from some of the shorter flights!) I always get time for a cup of tea and something to eat on every turnaround too. The way I see it is that I've started right at the deep end so it's not too bad for me. The one that are the most unhappy with the long days are the crew that are used to doing 2 sectors a day. Jettesen you cheeky git! lol! No i'm not affraid of hard work! It's just it's been a while since I worked full time as I was a student and I am used to crawling out of bed at 2pm and going to a lecture then coming home again, having dinner then going back to bed! I know the novelty will wear off eventually and when that time comes maybe i'll move to another airline or maybe even start a new career. I am only 20 after all!!!!!! |

I think Jettesen was refering to me from what I previously wrote. I'm not scared of hard work but pay me for it and i'm sorry but half of these airlines expect you to work like a d@@ and pay you peanuts. Why work 4 sectors when I can get paid good money with plenty of time off and yes I do work hard when I do 15 hour trips so i'm not scared of hard work. I just don't see the appeal of doing 4 sectors a day, I would just get sick of it, maybe its different for some other people, just not the job for me. |

Yeah I agree with you. I personally couldn't spend longer then four hours on a flight before I went insane! I like the fact that the old passengers get off and the new ones get on and I'm always kept busy. On the longer flights I hate sitting in the galley with nowt to do! Of course it's a personal choice and i'm not attacking anyone for what they prefer!!! |

I do very long international sectors and I can tell you, the only way I survive is by having access to the espresso machine in first class!!!! Oops! also forgot...a cold beer after a long sector helps too.... cheers 2 all |

in some cases the novelty doesn't wear off, at least the pleasure of doing a job you like doesn't! In a while you'll know what suits you best, LH or SH, schedule or charter and will be able to make your career choices for the future . What you should avoid like the plague is to join the "Moaning Club" (it's a very big club, has members throughout the world ;) ). Those people take the joy of flying away from people, and soon you'd be seeing only the bad sides of it. Never lose your focus, always remember what YOU like, especially when something you DON'T like is taking place (4 o'clock RT? Bad destination? Well it's a small price to pay for lying in the sun in MAD. The Purser from Hell? Next one will be better) When I leave home, of course I am not happy to leave behind my loved ones, but then I switch to "work mode" and soon I'm happy to work for a company I like, to do a job I like and often going to places I like. Surely beats (for me) sitting all day in an office. Remain positive and keep your mind focused on what's important. The day you'll really be fed up with flying or the company you are working for, resign or change company before becoming bitter or checking into the Moaning Club. I wish you all the fun I've had (and am still having) for your career :) |
I just don't see the appeal of doing 4 sectors a day, I would just get sick of it, maybe its different for some other people, just not the job for me Yesterday we were scheduled on a 4 sector day which I thought was going to be routine & uneventful; major thunderstorms made the day go much faster, especially after entering cloud :p 4th sector flight back from Spain was the best; had a spectacular light show illuminating the sky all around us; there was no other place I'd rather be! Flying is a good laugh & fun - it's a case of finding the type that suits you the best. |

Interesting thread this one, and sad to see a few members of the Moaning Club already. Personally I *love* flying, even after the :mad: days. Its those days that make it interesting - the disruptive pax, the medical incident, the weather diversions etc - sorry if I sound a bit odd (yeah I know I do :E ) but thats the stuff that makes it different every day!!! The novelty has not worn off here folks, granted I am only at about 3 years, but definately not worn off and aviation is a career for me 100%. Oh wow Bluestars, hope your first flight went well. I know what you mean about those thunderstorms on Monday. We landed just as they started and we must have floated to our stand! Lots of flights after us had to wait nearly two hours for a free stand as no aircraft were taking off!
Flyblue thanks for that really good advice!!! I think everyone at bmi is in the moaners club, but I've tried my hardest to stay out of it and even answer back to the moaners now!!! Thaks everyone else for your advice! It really appreciate it!! |

some of us in Australia do work very hard aswell and have the same passion. trust us we do a full service in Y on a 40 minute flight, so we work very hard, all with a smile on our faces-
Just thought i'd make a point of saying that so people from other airlines in Europe etc don't think that all airlines are the same over here! Good to hear you're enjoying it though |
