Is this an industry first? What measures are your cabin crew allowed to take against in-flight unruliness? :ouch:

I didn't know cc had access to tasers at some airlines. Is it just KAL or do others allow this?
I am in two minds about allowing cc to use tasers for security reasons.

They shouldn't be tying him to the seat. His hands should be cuffed behind his back & then his seat belt should be fastened around him. Doesn't stop the kicking & spitting though. A window seat, with no one in the row in front helps with that.

Apart from the obvious concerns of whether it's safe (from an EMC point of view) to be discharging a stun gun in an aircraft cabin, the other concern often forgotten is making damn sure that it can't be used against oneself. If airlines start tooling up like this in a major way then one might wonder what the pre-boarding security check is for. There's an obtainable stun gun provided free of charge (pardon the pun) on the plane.

Same goes with air marshals carrying their weapons on to aircraft. It's fine so long as no one actually knows who the marshal is, something that is increasingly difficult to conceal in this day of social media. Services like Facebook with their facial recognition are beginning to make it possible for anyone to identify anyone else, carelessly set account options permitting...

I hope the Koreans punish him justly, ie. a minimum of 20 years hard labour. I don't know why airlines don't carry duct tape to restrain these types to the seat - several wraps around each ankle to the foot rail, around each wrist to an arm rest (or behind their back) and a few wraps around the upper torso and seat back would hold them effectively.

Having seen a pax go berserk. Getting the restraint (pack) on him was virtually impossible. Took at least 6 people but due the confines of the cabin it was very difficult to actually get hold of him. (I was dead heading crew & was scheduled to fly back so kept out of it. Just acted as a witness)

Back in 1970's when BA operated Air New Zealand's DC10's there was a restraining kit on board which consisted of a pair of handcuffs and a large wooden cosh! We were not allowed to use it.

Later on BA introduced handcuffs and restraining harness on board its own flights.

Having witnessed a few pub fights and others in confined spaces I truly wonder if this is such a good idea. mssbarrat also makes the really important point that if you are not careful, your weapon gets used against yourself. It doesn't take much to imagine a "bundle" and resulting melee on a aircraft that develops into situation where the taser is required. How does the user get a clear shot? And do the CA's have the assertiveness and training in close combat to use such a device? Inflicting extreme pain on others is not as easy you might imagine, especially for those who normally care for others. Korean might also find that not every male CA is as assertive as they might need in such circumstances. I wish them the very best; it sounds like they will need it as this strategy has not quite been thought through.

...We have to sympathise with some of those diminutive young female cabin crew in the 'Far Eastern' section of the planet. Maybe we Westerners could lend them a few of ours. A couple of our senior 60 year old 14 stone short-fused babes on each crew, and they would soon fall into line....

One Green - It sounds like you have the more smaller, more genteel and femine types. Nobody messes about with our 'cabin crabs'.

Seems it has been happening since 2002....................but just now come to our attention. 5 pax already zapped. KAL gives no information when, why or who (foreigners?) enjoyed the attentions of their stun guns.

Again boys and girls: Does your airline carry tazer/stun guns aboard in cockpit or in the cabin? Don't be shy to share..................:ouch:
