Shared Leadership in Aviation

Shared leadership is “a dynamic, interactive influence process among individuals in groups for which the objective is to lead one another to the achievement of group goals”. During critical situations, teams following shared leadership were found to be effective. Particularly with rising levels of complexity, time pressure and task load, vertical leadership may be vulnerable and susceptible due to increased situational and dynamic demand on leadership. But effective crews by engaging each other in shared leadership can enhance their problem solving abilities to cope with during emergencies and critical incidents.

This concept in multiteam systems, especially commercial aviation, based on a recent research is discussed in “Contrasting outcomes in multi team systems - Lessons from Air Canada 797 and Air France 358 accidents”. Read on at Shared leadership | Aviation Medicine :: Aerospace Medicine
