Young children in seats
 

I probably should know the answer to this but don't/can't remember.

My wife's daughter plus 2 children recently flew to visit us (internal Finland not Finnair).

The baby (6 months) was attached to the mother by an infant lapbelt (or whatever it is called) but the 2 year old sat in the seat beside her with just the regular adult lapbelt.

Is this the normal way of doing things as I felt it seemed quite dangerous?

I then thought - what do airlines do when one person turns up with two small children?

It's normal, at 2 years and over and the child will have to have their own seat, (usually at the cost of a standard ticket). The lap belt is considered safe enough. Parents may choose to purchase and use a child restraint system such as a CARES Harness if they consider it appropriate for their child, and nearly all airlines now allow them and can assist in fitting them.
Children under two years old are classed as an infant... they get a free ticket but they sit on a lap with an infant / extension belt.

It can differ slightly by airline but it's very commonly done this way.

Those bookings aren't allowed, each infant must be accompanied by 1 adult.

The industry convention (may not apply to LoCos) is that the first infant has a passenger type code INF and pays the infant fare, typically 10%, is not entitled to a seat, and gets a limited baggage allowance (5 0r 10kg). The second infant is passenger type coded INS and has a seat, and pays the child fare (50% or 67% in most cases.)

Thanks for that chap/esses - I had never heard of a CARES harness.

Have told wife's daughter and she can decide.

Her mate (single mum of two new born twins) was hoping to visit daughter but I think she may have a problem.
