Call me darling!

After a recent court case where a steward complained that he didn't like being called darling (because it insulted his faith) Male air steward sues British Airways because colleague called him 'darling' - Telegraph

I was wondering what names really annoy people. I never mind being called darling, sweetie, huns, etc by my colleagues although I admit I am slightly concerned when its by my customers but I have no idea why.
Anyone had any strange names used on them?:)

vctenderness 30th Apr 2012 07:56

Over my career as a Trollie Dollete I have been called many names including

W*****. T***** A******* Miserable old git, Oi You, Lazy fat B********

Misery guts etc.

I quite enjoyed them all!

It's quite culturally dependent - when I was growing up the bakery we went to was staffed by an old Welsh lady who would refer to people as "ooooh, have a nice day, my lover", but clearly it was just a mutated version of "have a nice day, 'luv" as one might hear in much of the UK from older people. I suppose someone might have taken offence, but it would be their reception at fault, not the transmission from her.
Different people and different cultures have different ways of expressing friendliness, you just have to go with what they mean by it. Sounds like a storm in a teacup on this occasion.

If you live in the Birmingham or Black Country area, it's not uncommon to hear someone call you 'cock' or 'ducky'

It sounds like a time waster has clogged the already busy judicial apparatus.
Would it not have been easier, more productive to take the person on the side and asked not to be called darling.
I think if there was a court case for everyone I have called darling, my company would have been depleted by now!
I shall be very careful now and become a miserable git.

For anyone who feels they may be being bullied at work, there is good advice here.

Slasher 30th Apr 2012 13:32

I would never call any male (or tranny/eunuch/girlyboy/etc)
hostie "darling" - EVER! :yuk:

With all that PC nonsense running rampant in the West it is
amazing anyone of either sex can get laid...

Juud 30th Apr 2012 14:02

Slash, maybe read the article before you enlighten us with your rather mono-thematic and homo-phobic views?
First line in the article:

British Airways has been sued by a male cabin crew member because a woman colleague called him "Darling."
Unless youŽve recently had a sex change operation yourself, if youŽd call or not call a male FA 'darling' is entirely irrelevant.

TightSlot 30th Apr 2012 18:39

Wasting your time there Juud - too many syllables in some of those words I fear

A big problem

The guy who started this legal action has a big problem, the way he as been talked to by other CC is just standard CC banter, and the Way he claimed that his reading of the bible was being ridiculed simple fails to ring true.

CC are a very liberal bunch and take most things in there stride, so are unlikely to discriminate against this guy, in my view having seen the reports and looked at this thread I would suspect he has personal problems or he is trying to make a few quid in the courts.

People like this bring minority groups into disrepute most of if us like to live and let live but pointless court actions like this do only harm to people who are outside the norm.

My advice to him would be to go and seek help for the problems you have and stop using and abusing others to try to distract from the issues that you have.

I wonder if she's the same CC member who called me darling a couple of years ago, in that case it came with a load of attitude because I didn't want to close my window blind as I was enjoying the view of New York.

A few weeks later she was in front of me (and others) for a job as CC in a large corporate jet.

Our colleague who complained needs to get over himself, round here the references to front left/right Nigel and forward and aft galley slaves are some of the repeatable names. I dread to think of the fit of the vapours he'd have if he was labelled with some of the other names that go around, I sometimes think our CC a recruited more for their sense of humour than anything else, and I'm bloody glad of that.

Oh, the irony.:ugh:

I'm a great believer of "what goes around" etc etc.

Well hopefully this Man will find that feeling insulted by an innocent comment works both ways. Perhaps he'll find himself up in court after using terminology deemed as offensive due to faith or any other reason, by another equally narrow minded person with a chip on each shoulder and an appetite to challenge every possible statement that could be misconstrued/manipulated as offensive.

Don't know if i'm just being thick, but it strikes me that he can't be very serious about his bible -studies, as i believe it strictly rules against "man lying with man".....or is this yet another case of religious zealots who choose a "pick 'n mix attitude to religion. (a truly preposterous concept, there either "is" or "isn't" a superior being, it's not negotiable, and anyone purporting to have, or had, a direct audience with the diety, is delusiory, not to say conceited and arrogant.

If he want's to be openly "gay" that's his perogative,so is the ribbing that comes with it.

I had the "misfortune" (see what I mean?) to be Essex -Born...Despite living over half my life in this Northern enclave of sheep-lovers, i'm still a "cockney" comer-in.....If it worried me, I'd have been long-gone.

I smell vexatious litigation to make a few bob...award "precious" 50 P and the costs of the case.

I once worked with a Chinese Flight Ateendant whose chosen English name was Darling.

She would have been a very safe woman to have an affair with - no chance of a slip up at home!
