A330,Crew Rest and Cabin PAs

Just some clarification please.
There are two ways of making Cabin PAs on an A330:
1.PA All which unfortunately is heard in the Tech Crew Rest
2.PA 2 which is heard only in Y/C.
If turbulence is experienced seat belt goes on and PA from Flight Deck is made.
If the flight is from Japan or China an FA will make a PA in the appropriate language.
So what do you do?
PA All or PA 2 ?
Personally I am guided by the Captains requirements after discussion prior departure.
No Problems you would think.
Some CC are now taking issue with this and insist that they must make in cabin PAs using PA all which disturbs pilot rest.
I would rather have a well rested pilot on the flight deck.
I have been written up by a member of my crew(anonymous) for requesting PA2
Trivial I know but my manager has requested an interview to discuss rthe matter.
I smell a ****e sandwich coming my way.

It depends what your company procedure is - if you company procedure is to PA the whole aircraft (as mine is) then you need to use PA1.

Your role as an onboard manager is to follow the documented procedures whereever possible not adjust them because you don't agree with them - if you don't agree with them then you need to submit relevent reports in the hope of getting the procedure changed.

If your companies procedure is to use PA1 and you decide to use PA2 for whatever reason and a J class pax gets injured in turbulance & claims they didn't know the seatbelt sign was on due to no PA and takes legal action against your airline - as you're the individual who didn't follow procedure you'll have a whole lot more issues then a tired pilot!

As for the "dobber"... well that's a whole other issue - that being the case there appears to be a culture issue if you have crew dobbing directly to management as apposed to highlighting their concerns directly with you or putting in a safety report.

At the end of the day I'd assume that as the onboard manager you or your second in charge would make all the PA's anyway which makes me wonder how the other crew even realised?

Meat In The Shite Sando

Procedure:
Seat Belt sign on
PA from Flight deck
Followed up by PA from Language Speaker.
Flightdeck Callback verifying all pax and crew are seated with seat belt fastened.
No probs during day sector.
Night sector is a different story.
Solution:Get engineering to disconnect speaker in tech crew rest.
Outcome- everybody happy?

regardless of

someones opinion.
1) PA made from Flight deck
2) make PA to All PAX
3) Callback to all crew
4) confirm with the tech crew all secure
cant be an issue as you follow SOP:ok:
anyone unhappy email fleet manager

As a QF techie (though admittedly not on the bus), I'm not sure that it's a huge deal really.

Tech crew rest is frequently disturbed when the seatbelts sign comes on in the middle of the night anyway, by the light and the chime which are unavoidable. It was certainly that way in the aft tech crew rest on the 744, and it's usually that way on the 767 too unless you're an amazingly sound sleeper.

I wear earplugs to make the chime, PA, and screaming baby problem disappear. Can't take away the bumps though!

Now the dobbing - that's a whole other issue! In this climate, I'd just stick with SOPs.

Handset PA + ALL

On the A330 cockpit handset, pressing PA + ALL means a PA is made to all pax loud speakers but NOT the crew rest.

One can only assume the Cabin handsets behave the same way.

Busdrivers I know reckon thats how it works in the cabin too. Strange French logic

Confused

PA
PA All
Pa1
PA2
From the Cabin which one will go to pax but not the Tech Crew Rest?
Thats what this all about.
Contacting the pax without disturbing tech crew breaks

I can confirm that PA + ALL will not be heard in the crew rest. Slamming the cockpit door is another matter!

L5Brassco 2nd Feb 2010 02:33

Push press to talk (PTT) button = PA all pax cabins including F/D crew rest
Push PA then "all" button = PA all pax cabins but not F/D crew rest
Push PA then 1 button = PA to J/C cabin only
Push PA then 2 button = PA to E/Y cabin only
:ok:

I guess that explains why my Bus driver mates are continually getting their rest disturbed.

The cabin crew think they are doing the right thing by not using PA + All when that is what they should be doing if they don't want to wake the crew.

Information

Is this info written anywhere?
It now makes sense but I cant find it any of the company manuals

L5Brassco 2nd Feb 2010 10:41

CC Ops Manual Volume 2 Chapter 17
17.A330.11.2.4 Passenger Address System (PA)
Which says don't use PA1 or PA2 when F/D Rest is occupied!!

I am really going to have to get a life...

Bad Hat Harry 2nd Feb 2010 11:28

Contradiction ?

Sorry L5B doesnt that contradict your previous post ?

ditzyboy 3rd Feb 2010 13:48

It is my understanding and experience that PA+ALL does not come out on the TCR. Just lifting the handset and pushing the PTT button will ('Direct PA' on AIP).

I thought that PA1 or PA2 came out on speakers only in that zone?
