Thanks somewhereat1l for settling the "down route standby" flutter down. As is the case with any airline, you generally don't get caught out with crew sickness because you have more than the minimum. If it does get desperate , next step - the company attempts to contact those at the hotel and reduce a crew member's slip time. I'm sure there would be some sort of facilitative clause in the work rules for "operational requirements"

dbxgirl3194 4th Feb 2009 09:47

...and that is exactly what will happen - as with other long-haul airlines, someone will be asked (and expected to) operate if the crew falls below 10. However, no one will be officially on 'hotel standby' as was previously the plan.

I prefer no hotel standby. If they ask me I might do it....as long as I get allowances for 2 nights :E

Wouldn't that turn out to be a bit of a headache handing out usb lights to all? ie: extra weight and people stealing them.

Care to shed some light on 'Econonmy lite'?

somewhereat1l 4th Feb 2009 21:51

The USB lights are a bad idea. More expense, more weight, more work for the crew. Cheaper to offer an eye mask for guests who want to sleep when the person next to them wants to read.

Can't comment on Economy Lite product...commercially sensitive :oh:

I Just Want To Fly 5th Feb 2009 09:35

The above mentioned product is NOT confirmed.

All crew, PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS IT!

As somewhereat1L mentioned, it is commercially sensitive.

Commuting

Hey guys,

Am looking for some help. Really want to hear from someone who is commuting say from BNE for the job.

I can't see it being a problem commuting down for rostered trips, but when it comes to the standby days that is where I get concerned...how are people planning on doing this? What is the length of the standby days?

Please help! Feel free to PM me!

Cheers,
:ok:

dizzylizzy 7th Feb 2009 09:58

Tell me what Econonmy Lite is! If you do I'll tell you what the contents of a SnackonQ bag is, and maybe if your lucky a First amenity pack featuring Payot. Swindle?

I Just Want To Fly 9th Feb 2009 08:55

Well our first a/c landed today! It really exists!

Love their branding, got at least 4 SMS from friends asking what the big deal was with the 'new Qantas plane landing in Sydney'???? Nice job V Aus advertising dept!!!

Did they go for a white paint job because all-red on a 777 is too expensive??? Serious question!

Melbourne base..?

Heard that V will be starting direct flights MEL - LAX from Sep this year. I assume this will mean a MEL base crew..?
Wonder how long one will need to wait before applying for a transfer to MEL..?

somewhereat1l 10th Feb 2009 07:13

Correct. MEL - LAX from September :ok: Doubt they will have a MEL base anytime
soon though but I'm sure the Melbourne commuters will be swapping trips with SYD based crew.

Has anyone else heard a rumour of SYD-ICN (Seoul, Korea) ?

AirborneSoon 10th Feb 2009 09:12

I also doubt they will go for a Melb crew base, it's very expensive compared to just paxing crew down to Melb on Virgin Blue or better yet, having the crew operate Syd-Mel-Lax. I don't see V-Oz going for a 2nd crew base anytime in the next few years.

I really hope the Seoul rumour is true, I'd love to go there.:ok:

flyergirl 10th Feb 2009 20:03

syd-mel-lax???

Um, reality check...me thinkith that may just end up going a tinsy winsy bit over limitations(yes even for cabin crew).....its a long day just mel-lax! Good luck if you end up doing that! Can you say fatigue?

somewhereat1l 11th Feb 2009 06:10

If we ever did SYD-MEL-LAX I would be the first of many crew leaving the company. That would be a huge day and outside of the FRM framework :bored:

Door_One_Right 11th Feb 2009 06:21

Surely, they would be operated as a W pattern over 6-8 days, ie:

SYD-LAX LAYOVER
LAX-MEL LAYOVER
MEL-LAX LAYOVER
LAX-SYD HOME

AirborneSoon 11th Feb 2009 09:34

Re: above pattern....:yuk:

But so true, could very well happen. I've only heard that at present the international trips are expected to be 4 days only. But things can change and probably will.
