PER sh base
 
Hi, would like to know what destinations per sh base are flying to at the moment, trip lengths, no of overnights, average wages etc. Also how do people find comuting to syd, are base swaps readily available etc. Would really appreciate some information from someone in the know as I am moving there soon.

You will find the destinations, trips lengths etc are all available from the Perth Bid book on the cabin crew website which can be accessed through the Qantas intranet.

I know a handful of people (there are quite a few more) that commute. Depending on your senority level you shouldnt have to many problems.

Cant help with salary sorry.

QF PER Base Ground School Starting In March 06'
 
Just wondering if anyone that's on the QF "Reserve Bench" (from the may/june interviews and subject to medical/reference checks) have heard anything in regards to PER Base?
A number of Jetstar and Eastern crew will be starting ground school in march as they have scored a gig via "career progression".
A good chance that we won't hear anything by Feb 06' and will be lost in the QF recruiting Fantasyland?

Incidently it isn't all that exciting compared to other bases but the flying seems fairly consistant. Will beat the hell out of doing double AVV everyday for sure ;)

Career Progression was activated. I start with 15 other Jetstar people on 13 Feb.

Been with the Company for over five years now... Have to say I will be sad to leave. But I am starting to get excited about the move over to Perth and the start of another of life's chapters.

I will NOT be sad to rid myself of the hideous rags we call a uniform - however comfortable it is to work in. :yuk:

PER can handle anything.

Ditz, it depends what you find exciting? Infact a lot of PER crew would rather do the flying that they currently do in PER than any of the flying out of the other bases. In PER we do continuous Hong Kong and Singapore trips with NRT bound to return (in MEL you need 20+ years to get a HKG). You won't get a day trip unless you have the seniority, but with even more long haulers coming over, all of which will generally slot if above you guys, that will begin to get hard. There are a lot more people in PER than what there was originally and the PER base is expanding rapidly.

All i can say is, everyone coming over to PER on career progression, make an effort to enjoy it and don't come to work whinging about not getting your transfer back home or how much you hate PER etc, as that's what a lot of the last career progression guys did and to be honest PER crew are over it and won't take it, because most PER crew are there because they want to be, family are in PER etc etc and wouldn't want to fly out of anywhere else. We understand you guys are leaving family and friends etc and it's hard leaving home, but at the end of the day, you all accepted a position based in PER, simple.

Get excited. PER is a great base to fly out of with great crew, can be very different flying to what you're used to, relaxed. You'll find compared to the other bases, PER can be very procedural and some of the CSM's can be very anal something of which other people who have transferred have found it hard to adjust to.

It always good to see new people and i can assure you, you'll be welcomed with open arms.

Yes. Perth really is a great place to be based and also to live. For those coming over with career progression - we look forward to meeting you ! Yes, you have made the career choice to come to Perth - there is nothing wrong with putting your name on the transfer list to head back home ( if you want to) though don't push it, it will happen when it happens- though while you are here - enjoy working with some of THE nicest people you will ever meet - and the flying is great too. When your transfers do come up ( if that's what you want) - I bet many of you will think twice and will want to stay ! Yes, very procedural here - but that is just standard and should be followed anyway. Really, we are a great bunch of guys and very genuine and will welcome you with open arms. We look forward to seeing you all soon ! And don't forget , a stranger is a friend you have never met - and that's us!

Thanks for the welcome... I can assure you that I am not one of those people. I am all for dealing with the consequences of CHOICES I make. I am looking forward to the positive challenge of moving over and getting settled in. I am sure it won't be easy but positive all the same.

I can almost guarantee there will be people coming over who will have a whinge at some point (we are flight attendants, after all!). Just don't paint us all with the same brush.

I think you will find any Jetstar flight attendant with 5 years seniority is quite used to dealing with change (5 uniforms, 3 airlines, 2 start ups etc etc...) and making do in less than desirable situations (Unit Trust arrangement or JQ start up)- all with a smile.

Now about PER being able to handle me... Just tell me where the day club is and all will be fine :E

Within Jetstar (and on our ASIC) it is our actual Impulse start date. For the Global senority list it is the day that QF bought Impulse - 21 November 2001.

rubarb, exactly. Atleast following procedure, you're covering your a**e, consistent aswell. Perth is a great base with great people. Like you said, transfers will happen eventually, it's just a matter of time, making an effort to enjoy it all will just make things easier.

I don't want to seem as if i'm lecturing, just want to let the guys coming across know what the situation is like (even if i am repeating myself). As i said, PER is a fantastic base and they won't have any problems with anyone, it's great to see new people coming into the base and career progression finally happening for you guys who have waited so long. Those who want to transfer back to MEL or SYD, i hope you get it asap, i would be hanging out for the same thing if i had to move away from home, family etc etc.

In reference to one of your comments, I hope 200% that the base keeps on expanding and if that means i get pushed onto reserve, then so be it, i still have a job and that's all that counts to me.

At the end of the day, i'm sure they will enjoy PER, it is what you make it.

ps- will we have the pleasure of your company in PER in 06?

Hey all you PER people!

Just wondering what's going on with the external recuritment for the PER base? Is it still done on a casual basis, or are they employing people on permenent contracts??

Also, what is reserve? Is it like our 24 hour availability over here at BA???

Wish they'd transfer BA crew to QF. Missing home soooo much, but still can't bring myself to leave BA yet cause I've just moved over to long haul and it's too much fun. Bring on January, when I'll be coming back for the month!!! YAY!!!!! :) :) :)

A recruitment drive was held some time ago and people were told it was for fixed term Perth base starting in Feb. I have a few friends on the famous short list that went through that recruitment drive and they have now been advised they will be contacted by Qantas in February and advised of what they now intend to do with them.

As you know Qantas never mention the scary word permanent. It is either Casual through MAM or fixed term contract (if they decide to go down that road). However, with the introduction of the IR laws in Australia workplace agreements maybe offered in the new year.

Now that the initial shock has worn off everyone what is the general feeling amoung Perth based crew on the influx of 32 Regionals?

The group going over from Eastern are a great bunch of people.

The feeling is good. In fact a lot of people in PER probably haven't even heard that 32 people from regionals are coming over, it's not something that has ever come up in conversation and a lot of people probably aren't bothered with it. What is the opinion and feeling amongst the 32 people coming over?

The Perth base is a lot bigger base since it first opened, there are A LOT more people, including a lot of PER long haulers that have transferred over and more to come in Feb/March, 32 casuals were made full time in July, so 27 people moved from over east to take the positions in PER, more casuals and more on their way. The flying is also very different compared to the other bases. The PER base is a great base to work out of, personally i like the flying i do and the people are great aswell. Everyone will be welcomed with open arms. I don't think there is a huge issue with the seniority thing as there was when career progression guys first came to the PER base. At that time the PER base was a lot smaller and the flying was different, so the impact of the career progression guys slotting in was quite obvious, now in PER S/H there are people that have been flying for various amounts of time, some that have been flying less than the regional guys coming over, some the same and some that have been flying a lot longer, so i think it will all be fairly scattered.

Either way, the people coming over will like flying out of PER (even though it's not home) and will make some good friends. As long as they keep an open mind and make an effort to enjoy it.

Sorry, not quite up to speed on some of the new Aussie laws...

What's this new workplace agreement thing? Does that mean that they will have to offer permenent contracts???

I'd do the interview and all that again if that was the case, it's just that I don't want to pay out all the money again to renew my first aid certificate and do my medical, to be put on the shortlist again for months on end and then offered another casual position when I'm already working permenently for BA.

Any info appreciated! :)

Stay with B.A... I know of so many people who have spent money on medicals, first aid courses etc to be put on the waitlist for 6mths, some extended to 12mths, some offered fixed term contracts, some casual positions,some offered nothing but a thankyou but your time is up, nobody offered permanent positions. Sadly the days of getting a full time permanent position with our National carrier in this country have gone.
Qantas the spirit of Australia....Sadly I think not.

Sarah, yes it's true, unfortunately the days of permanent positions being offered with QF are rare and any positions these days seem to be casual through MAM. However there are people who have already been on the shortlist for 12+ months who apparently have been told that they will hear in February what's going to happen to them, the mention of fixed term contracts has come up. As to what this means for the future i have no idea.

In regards to permanent positions, it does happen. They have to offer permanent positions somewhere along the line and i think these positions will always be offered to current MAM casuals as per the current agreement of casuals lodging their expressions of interest for full time which covers a 12 month period. They have to fill out an expression of interest form for full time which covers a 12 month period and if nothing comes up in that time, then they fill out another one for the next 12 months. If permanents are required and they decide to use career progression people, career progression isn't triggered until 32 external applicants (ie casuals or people "off the street") are made permanent like what's recently happened.

I think permanent positions do get offered, but they are minimal and there is a lot of waiting. As for having to fork out money for medicals and first aid certificates etc, that is a basic requirement for the job, if you're not willing to do this, then don't apply, there's plenty of people that will.
