Welcome Aboard 30th Sep 2005 08:52

We're off to Perth in Western Australia. Can anyone enlighten me on the nicer suburbs to live in that aren't too far from airport or city?

Thanks :ok:

WA

sinala1 4th Oct 2005 18:21

I cant really help on that - SkySis I believe that may be your territory?

Perth is a *beautiful* city though, you will love it... and the people are HOT too - truly the best looking people in australia - must be all the fresh air and sunshine!

SkySista 5th Oct 2005 05:10

Hi guys!!!

Thanks for the mention!! (Sinala, I love you!!! ) yes we are a good-looking bunch.... (mostly... :E) *files nails innocently*

Unfortunately I'm not in the property market myself (living with family atm.. long story, don't ask :p) but I think it depends on what you want from the location.

e.g. Do you want to be near the city? Nearer the airport (even though is pretty easy to get to from most places).

Near the beach? Near the bush? Close to shops? Close to schools? and so on...

Size of house, type of house (apartment, house, unit) rental/buying price.. etc etc

I guess the one thing I can say with authority is stay the heck away from Pepperwood... (or, "Lockridge" as it used to be called) different name, same.... :E

(no offence to people living there, but you gotta admit, it's pretty dodgy...)

Something like Domain.com.au or realestate.com.au may be able to help... I do recall the West Australian doing a survey of most popular suburbs earlier in the year...

I'll see if i can find it....

OZcabincrew 5th Oct 2005 06:01

welcome aboard, who are you going to be flying for again in WA?

I didn't know Lockridge is now called Pepperwood? how long has it been like that?

Franck 5th Oct 2005 07:28

Plenty of beautiful suburbs in Perth. Look at Mt Lawley, Inglewood, North Perth, East Perth. Close to the city and the river you have South Perth, Como, Applecross, Ardross, East Fremantle, Fremantle.. Subiaco is a very popular suburb with flight attendants and so is Cottesloe (on the beach). If you would really like to go upmarket maybe Nedlands and Claremont would be good. Hope this will get you started.

Good luck with your search and hope you have a great time in Perth.

Bidan 5th Oct 2005 07:49

Shenton Park is great also, right next to Subi and really close to Kings Park...

sinala1 5th Oct 2005 09:18

Ah SkySis keep filing those nails babe, you know its true! Perth-ians are stunners :ok:

Agreed with Subiaco, Freemantle and Cottesloe Beach all being fantastic places to live, however not sure if Freo and Cottesloe are terribly well located for airport? Maybe 30 - 45 mins drive? Open to clarification, its been a while since I hit the Cott for a sunday session... :E

(Sinala1 suggests you dont 'hit the Cott' for a sunday session then persuade your whole crew to go across to the beach to go swimming whist all somewhat *ahem* inebriated.... may end up with more flesh showing than you expected..........) :ugh: :{

SkySista 5th Oct 2005 10:08

Ooh yes, Cott is lovely, as is Subi (have friends who live in both).. my aunt is somewhere around north perth...

Claremont & Applcross, Dalkeith etc etc very classy and prob expensive for us Perthies, but if you're coming across from the eastern states having sold a fair-sized house, you'd be surprised at what you can (could?? given the property market & buyers outnumbering sellers)... for example my mother's place (which is in quite a nice suburb, 4 bed 2 bath B&T on a half acre with city views) would go for the same price as a 1-bed unit in Sydney or Melbourne.....!

I've done Cott to the vicinity of the airport in around 22 minutes once... but it was late at night. Rush hour would pose a longer time. Though with the Polly Pipe getting around is a bit quicker and less congsted... well, except for days like today when someone has a pile-up right outside it, or so I heard....

If you don't mind being a bit further out the hills may be an option for you. Darlington, Mundaring etc but they tend to get pricey up that way (not as pricey as Subi or Cott though as far as i know)

Some idea of what you'll pay:

a 2-bed, 1 bath unit (top floor) in Cottesloe, ocean views (this is agent-speak for " a tiny smidge of blue in the top right corner" probably... :E) for $350/wk

a 2-bed, 2 bath townhouse with study in Subiaco, fully furnished, in secure complaex & close to transport, $550/wk

1 bed 1 bath fully furnished apt in East Perth, pool and BBQ $220/wk
You should be able to find similar on any of the good real estate web sites.

As for what the particular suburbs are like, I know a survey was done on various characteristics but i can't find it for the life of me!! I bet my mum still has it from when she was looking for a house last year.... :)

Sinala, OMG! Sunday Sesh - I made the mistake of dragging some friends down to Cott - our timing was unbelievably bad as the US Navy was in town and every bar/club etc was full to the gills and totally impossible to get taxi and so forth. All of us with cars were getting asked for lifts here there and everywhere as there were no cabs to be had...!

But, nothing beats a nice Sunday arvo in summer with a good drink and some fish & chips at Cott beach!! :ok:

(by the way, that swimming episode wasn't around late Nov last year was it? Some terrible boyfriend of my mate nicked the clothes of some people who were skinny dipping and left them up at those pine trees - the poor buggers had to stay in the water till we took pity on them , told off said bloke and took the clothes back!! :E)

Ranjha83 5th Oct 2005 11:14

just wondering, is there are website for perth share accommodation in the city?

thanks for the help

cheers

sinala1 5th Oct 2005 17:21

haha no SkySis this was back in my earlier days of flying... unfortunately our PER overnights then got somewhat cut back (well at least mine did - maybe they had heard about me?? :O ) and so I have not had the chance to return to the Cott :{

our timing was unbelievably bad as the US Navy was in town
If you asked me, I would say your timing was unbelievably *good* :E

Either way WelcomeAboard, we all seem to be in agreeance that you will have a great time in PER (or YPPH if you for those in a particularly pilot-like mood) - good luck finding a place!

SkySis you are a baaaaaaad girl - thats why we love you so much! :E :ok:

OZcabincrew 5th Oct 2005 23:52

There are a lot of crew that live in South Perth, East Perth, Como etc and a lot of crew that share with eachother. I wouldn't bother going all the way out to Cottesloe etc, although a nice place, i have friends (crew) that live in Cottesloe that wished they lived a lot closer to the city and therefore the airport. I would be looking in the South Perth/Como/East Perth areas. I live about half an hour away from the airport, but it is very easy by just getting on the freeways and going! You'll soon find out that Perth is very easy to get around, it's either north of the river or south of the river, that's it! and if you're not from W.A, you're from the "East". There's W.A and then there's the east and the east is where all non West Australians are from and beware of W.A drivers, they are shocking! they have their own rules over here like not using indicators, that's just normal here.

Anyway, Perth is a great place to live. You'll enjoy it and it is what you make it. Don't come here and compare it to Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane etc because it's none of those, Perth is what it is and Perth people like it that way. You'll have fun!

Sinala, well, I was nearly going to put 'good timing', but hey, gotta maintain my image here :p It was quite funny actually, they were mostly really polite even when drunk; one of them got a bit rude towards us girls and his mates all told him off and bought us a drink :D The cabbies were making a killing though!!

Oh, sorry Oz, I forgot your question. As far as I know Lockridge has been "pepperwood" for quite a while... they were trying to remove the negative assosciations with 'Lockridge'... unless it got changed back again. Haven't been that way for some time so I wouldn't know. Kind of like how West Midland became 'Woodbridge' on the train line!! :E

I'm not as bad as people think, I just always end up looking like I am!! :p

Flying_Sarah747 6th Oct 2005 07:34

Oh I'm so jealous of you!!! Just got back to London from Perth this morning. I hate it when I have to leave home to come back here. :(

Is it going to be just you or are you moving with family as well? If it's just you, or you and a partner, no kids etc. I think Northbridge is quite cool and a nice place to live. Very trendy apartments and close to nightlife/city (walking distance) plus it wouldn't take very long to get to the airport.

If you've got a family, South Perth/Como are very nice but if you want something a little cheaper, but still nice, Rivervale is ok, and it also wouldn't take very long to get to the airport from any of those areas either, and they're close to the city (But not walking distance)

[email protected] never realised it changed its name!! Pepperwood sounds stupid!!!!!! It's definately a place to avoid, whatever the name, as is Balga!!!!! :P

SkySista 6th Oct 2005 15:57

Sarah, home on holidays???

It's definately a place to avoid, whatever the name, as is Balga!!!!! :P
Ah yes I hear these days part of Balga is going by the pseudonym of "Westminster". Right posh that one is, old boy ;)

Of course as you say single/with kids is also a big factor. Also if kids the age of the kids. Older kids probably okay with a flat/smaller house. Littler kids usually need a yard or park close by. So I guess once you have figured all the factors out you'll know more precisely what you want to be looking for!! :D

OZcabincrew 6th Oct 2005 16:01

Sarah!

So when are you coming back to good old Perth?

Welcome Aboard, when do you get to Perth?

cart_elevator 9th Oct 2005 02:17

"Ladies and Gentlemen .... Welcome to Perth where the time is 5:45pm..... and the year is 1963 !!!"

Sorry!

Couldnt resist!

:}

cartexchange 9th Oct 2005 06:36

so so so true cart elevator, but I would have said 1953

Flying_Sarah747 10th Oct 2005 17:07

Ladies and gentlemen welcome to London Heathrow where the local time is 1800 BC and nothing ever works. Do take care when leaving the aircraft as you are likely to get your head bitten off by the 'friendly' people residing in this city and I do hope you've got a wallet full of cash, as you'll certainly be needing it, but please do not expect to get value for that money as you won't!

I know I shouldn't bitch cause it's my choice to live here (Although I don't say I live here, I just work here) but when it comes to living in Perth or London, there's NO comparison...Sorry if you diss my city, I'll diss yours!!!!!

Oz, I've just got back from being in Perth...Will be back again in January now (Unless I come with work) I so can't wait for that lovely summer weather!!!! :)

OZcabincrew 10th Oct 2005 17:52

Sarah!

How funny! your first paragraph sounds so so similar to Sydney and Melbourne, its uncanny!

I couldn't resist either! ;)

I'm actually liking spring, it's always the way, in winter i can't wait for summer and then in summer can't wait for winter! Perth is very lucky to have great weather! When do you think you'll be permanently back in Perth? also, when are you in SIN next?

Oz
