Cabin crew V's baggage handlers.
 

Hi all,

I dont mean to sound rude but I was just wondering why cabin crew look down on baggage handlers?

I work for a handling company in DUB and we handle approx 10-13 airlines and not once,do we get a hello or how are you off any of the cabin crew.

As my mother tells me "Its nice to be nice". :confused:

Having worked in both jobs i don't think it's a case of cabin crew looking down on baggage handlers. I think because cabin crew and loaders have not very much contact as far as their jobs are concerned i think it can be mistaken for being looked down on from the loaders point of view.

Take for instance the caterers. The crew are in contact with familiar guys quite often on board the aircraft and so they are on name terms with each other.

I know from experience that it's easy to mistake the lack of communication from the cabin crew as being looked down upon but this is simply not the case!

Another way of looking at it is, from the girls point of view, the most obvious memories of their experience with loaders is them trying to get a glimpse up their skirt when operating the door. So in some cases you can't blame the cabin staff being wary as i have seen this myself on many occasions!

So don't take this to heart, and even if they do seem to be careful around the loaders just remember what they may have had to put up with in the past.

I'm based in Dublin but have worked in STN,I found the cabin crew in the UK more pleasant,maybe it's the accent!!!

By the way i totally understand where you are coming from. But having seen both sides i can make my own judgement on things.

There is a little withdrawal from some cabin crew from the loaders like i said but this is most likely because of bad experiences they have had in the past. However if a loader smiled and said hello as they passed i'm sure the crew member would also smile and say hi also. If not then either they are on a bad day or just plain miserable! lol

Have to agree with flaps' During extreme weather we often help out the baggage handlers with refreshments, wether hot or cold.
Although ive only been flying out of Edi for a year many of the cabin crew are on first name terms with the baggage handlers!

Haven't quite seen the same at other airports but then they're not my base airport. We are less friendly to the alpha guys when they forget the crew food though!!!! :{

Infact many crew at Edi are friendly with crew from different airlines, you'll often find an Orange crew member in the FlyBe's crew room having a gossip! Are we just a really friendly airport?

Have to say I think EDI is just a friendly airport EB, I worked out of EDI for 2 and a a half years and everyone got on with each other, maybe less with some of the dedicated airline ground crew though.

My ex used to work for BD on the ground and she told me the staff thought crew were way too up themselves to speak to! What a alot of p!sh! lol

Down here in Oz, i think we all pretty much make an effort to say hi and thank you to the cleaners/caterers etc. most of those cleaners in outports and places like Denpasar and Jakarta work damn hard, so its always nice to acknowledge that. I know personally once passengers have disembarked and you're on turnaround i like to just have a bit of a break from talking and jumping around the place etc for a few minutes until the next lot of passengers start boarding. caterers/cleaners/loaders etc need to realise we spend all day talking and smiling etc which is fine, so when we're not around passengers, its nice to just have a little bit of a break and just stop for a moment as i'm sure you can appreciate, as most of us acknowledge how hard you all work too.

hey Aerofoil, If I remember correctly the despatchers, caterers, load controllers, bus drivers and any other red bloodied male also try to look up the Hosties skirts, not just the loaders!!

Many, many years ago I was stitched up by a colleague and had to work 1 hour oevr my 12 hour night shift. The Hosty on the flight I was load controlling wanted to cheer me up and gave me coffee and biscuits, but no real improvement in my demeanour (though I did say thanks). Just before she closed the door she hoicked her kilt up to reveal the full kit of sussies, stockings and pretty lace knickers. Even 25 years later I can remember it very clearly and the memory still brings a smile to my face!!
