Qantas Interviews Contract International
 

I went for an interview with QF for long haul contract work in September and haven't heard anything. In the interview we were told that the positions were for 11 month contracts and that there would only be one interview day.

The day after the FAAA agreement was reached two people from the interview that I know were sent emails letting them know they were not successful. I also know that my referees have been contacted. I have contacted Qantas and was told that I would know by the 1st of December. Is it possible that Qantas conduct additional interviews even after doing reference checks?

If they no longer need any of the people interviewed due to the FAAA agreement being reached then I wonder why I haven't had an email telling me I have been unsuccessful? I would love to know if anyone is in the same boat or knows of someone else who is waiting.

I am certainly in the same boat went to ass cnt in syd for 11mnth contract on the 3sep04 at the Mercure airport htl.
Well I was one of those people who were franticaly contacted by QF several times due birth certificate etc.... I got the impression that it all was looking ok. I also thought that I would not be used as a strike breaker as it took weeeks for Qf to contact me. Then the FAAA and QF reached an agreement and I received the email that I was unsuccesfull and could not reaply for 6mnths. So no you are not alone

I would like to get a yes or a no so I know where I stand after waiting for nearly 3 months.

Ring and ask the progress of your application then, nothing in this industry is handed to you on a silver platter.

Hey overhere... Its not a simple case of "Ring and ask the progress..." As you either get cut off t reception, or if you do charm your way in, they "handle" you, and say they will look into it, they are processing a lot of files, and they will get back to you.

My only advice is hang in there. I know we have all heard that advice before, but I came to the conclusion that worrying was not making it come any faster!

I will tell you what I know, as I like hearing about others plights.

A friend interviewed about the same time I did (early Sept) and was contacted for the contract (in late Oct), declined and was offered MAM work as a causal. She also interviewed with MAM late Sept, but did not go to a panel. She is in Sydney right now training, and almost finished.

Another mate interviewed then as well, was rung on a Sunday morning in late Oct to get a medical, declined the offer and got the rejection email a week later.

One person I went to the MAM interview with also went to the QF contract interview, must have accepted the contract deal because Friend 1 saw her on a flight to Sydney where she was being trained. Not sure if this was before or after the FAAA/ QF letter of understanding.

So there is what I know. There are others in limbo as well ajc66, who have been assesed, paneled and have heard nothing for 3 months. My only suggestion is that they process different people at different speeds dependant on experience, or some unknown factor, and we will come ot the top of the pile eventually.

Here goes my story....

I was invited to go to an assessment centre at the Mercure Hotel back in July for a fix term contract of up to 10 months. This was for Language speakers only.

Got through that and invited to another group interview... Passed again..

Went to a Panel interview with two QF online staff and had the psychological test.... passed that and then was sent for the medical and criminal check.

Didn't hear anything for ages and then in October I was invited on the 3 month contract!! I was pissed!

Anyway, there was a person in my group that called them up this week and they were told that there would be offers made to people that went well in the new panel interviews in Dec. They were also told that 'you will be pleased with the offer'.....

I think that the offer will be something to do with the new airbus's.... What does everyone else think?

Not that I like telling you how to do your jobs (because I know I couldnt!) may I suggest a merger, as both threads are kinda interesting...

Also interesting to note that they have not denegrated into the mindless bagging and slander that some other nameless QF posts become... Good job mods!

Sorry guys but looks like you have been left out in the cold. The only reason Qantas interviewed was to use you if there was industrial action taken - as seen on the 7.30 report. Now the Company and FAAA have a principal agreement you will probably not be required. You will know when the EBA gets voted on (mid Dec) - thats why there are no answers, the company doesnt know if they will need you. Chances are the EBA will be a YES vote. This means the opening a capped London Base. As a result there could be a surpless of approx 400 crew by the time the base is completely operational by April 2005. Sorry but the outlook is not good.

I don't think you'll be offered positions within QF mainline, unless you are offered a position as MAM casual? definately won't be permanent, unless they offer you something with Jetstar etc. If permanent mainline is offered, QF will have a big fight on their hands from casuals and from regionals waiting on progression. It will be interesting to see what the outcome is?

I hope I'am wrong...but when I spoke to MAM last week I was told that 11 training classes have already graduated in the last 4 months to prepare for the December period and there may not be recruitment/training classes for a little while...which means I am screwed!:{

So lets see...if we do the maths of it say there is approximately 15 trainees in each class that 11x15=165 new recruits for syd and mebl bases so roughly about 82 for each base. Unless the number includes Perth and Bris....then it will be more saturated...which is kind of better...I suppose!

I do understand your positions, however the people on fixed term contract, be it 11 months or 3 months are Qantas employees, therefore Qantas can do what they please with them such as offer them LHR, AKL or even permanent long haul or short haul. On the other hand MAM was established to provide contract casuals to short haul so that Qantas did not have to directly employ them and feel obligated morally or legally to offer permanent employment.

That being said, Qantas has in the past shown their good faith by offering the last round of external permanent positions to MAM crew and this was when the Perth base opened. I am sure permanent positions will have to be offered early next year because the ratio in short haul of casual to permanent is quite high and based on past experience you can more then likely expect Qantas to offer some of these positions to MAM casuals.

Even though MAM casuals will be disappointed if contractors are placed into permanent positions there can be no fight on anyones hands because at the end of the day you are employed by a labour hire company and have no grounds to argue your case as apposed to directly employed Qantas fixed term crew.

I agree with you GalleyHag- Qantas has no obligation (be it legally or morally) to offer MAM casuals permanant work.

However, following the same line of thought, they have no obligation to employ FIXED TERM crew beyond the period set out in the contract, as they are, by nature of the term, and contract, FIXED TERM. Once that term is over, so is the obligation.

Now if we may apply a logical mind to it, (not saying anything Qantas does is logical- see GD telling wealthy flyers to fly another airline...) I can see as a leader/ manager certain benifits in offering progression to the regionals, or offering permanant Qantas positions to MAM casuals. Most of these staff have "cut their teeth" and have proven themselves often over a period of time flying, and therfore in my eyes I would see that as less of a risky move then offering a permanant position to an untested person, who you (in most cases) have not met in person, and are relying on the assesment of Adecco.

I do however see your point in that MAM casuals have a defined place in the structure of the company, and that does not include an entitlement of a permanant position. But I would rather, if I were a Cabin Crew manager, see staff with proven track records then have an "outsider" who I have no experience with.

I think that is another example of QF getting our hopes up. Everytime my classmates and I speak to someone there they tell us something different everytime. It is interesting though, if they do offer us something I wonder what it will be????

As for the new airbus thats not being delivered till Dec 06.... i think, so i can't see anything to connect us with that but I might be wrong.

When we went for the interview there was no mention of any other type of flying other than an international contract . If Qantas, as some people have suggested have no intention of employing people like myself who went for interviews in September in any capacity then why not just send an email saying NO!

Hey All....

Thought I would update you all with what I have recently found out. As everyone knows we are going to be paid one months' salary to have our contracts terminated and that should happened soon. But, I was told that there would be still a month that Qantas wants us to be on standby. In other words, I guess that there is still a slight chance of flying. (bulldust I reckon but just relaying the info).
We also will be getting a letter in the mail within the week so thats even more interesting!!:rolleyes: :eek: :zzz:

Anyone else got some info???

Just heard that two of my colleagues have been called and told that they have been offered the 11 month contract.

One has been offered BusFirst F/A, the other YCL.

They start Feb 13!!!!!!
