Great Books
Hey just looking for some information on great books about the crazy lives of flight attendants. I have read one called "Plane Insanity" and would like suggestions on others similar to this. Thanks

A very funny one is "Around the world in a bad mood - confessions of a Flight Attendant" by Rene Foss. Its quite difficult to find (in Australia at least!), but well worth the read!!!
My favourite part (and those who have read it will understand) is a chapter entitled 'Boarding - A Shakespearean Drama' where she takes the story of boarding and a double seating allocation, but portrays it as the story of Macbeth vs MacDuff - very very funny!!! :D :D :) |
Not to disrespect your opinion sinala1, but I really didnt like that book. There were a few funny moments I agree, but she spent nearly the whole book whining about her job and how crap it is. Why didnt she go and be an actress if she didnt like being a flight attendant?
I havent read Plane insanity, It sounds good though. I read a really cute book called 'Up Here Down there' by Nan Witcomb. Its almost 20 years old, and was written about former Ansett flight attendants and their stories while they were flying. I think its out of print now though, so it might be hard to get, but I just got it from my local library. Another good book is : Come fly with us! : a global history of the airline hostess, by Omelia, Johanna. Its all about the start of flight attending, right to the present day. Some of the past uniforms really are worth a look at! They are all the books that my library offer, and i have read them all. Obsessed, me? never!! :p |
Star84 thats ok, everyone is entitled to their own opinion! I personally found it highly amusing, and everyone I have lent it to thought the same thing, but different strokes for different folks! :ok:

Reviving this thread, I am in the middle of reading Air Babylon by Imogen Edwards-Jones, is quite funny so far!
Anyone else know any other similar-themed books? Thanks! |
I thought Around the World in a Bad Mood was funny too. Loved the bit about the heavy snow storm with every other airline cancelling all flights except hers, up to sign on on at some ungodly hour, mission to the airport, board, taxi, turn back, disembark, go home!
A friend is party through Air Babylon and says it's great so far. Not sure of any others. RaverFlaver :) |
I believe the first was 'Cabin Pressure' by Elizabeth Harwell
It's no longer in publication as it's quite old school. You can however buy used copies on amazon so I'm told... |
Sinala, I have been meaning to ask you lot about 'Air Babylon'.
My grandfather gave me an old book written by an early stewardess called 'Head In the Clouds' - Muriel Hanning-Lee. More 'old-school', but she was not only FA but secretary, supply orderer, mechanic organiser when something broke down-route... She also had some funny moments for example a snake getting loose on an overwater flight and hearing odd noises from the cockpit....! :p Sadly Ms Hanning-Lee died in a crash shortly before her book was published but it gave a great insight into how the girls coped in the early days (IIRC she was on Flying Boats etc... 30's and 40's I think) |
