refused a reference
 

Hi, i am thinking about applying for a cabin crew position with a UK charter company (possibly MON / TCX / EZY). However, each requires 5 years worth of job history plus references. A while ago i was dismissed from a job and the company are unable to provide me with a reference. When airlines ask for references is is just a case of confirming that i was working when and where i said i was or do they go more in depth than than? I have management staff who say they will give personal references but not on company headed paper.... Any thoughts...

This is a very strict subject in our days.

However depending on how long you worked there,what you could do is not declare that job and just say you went travelling or something and then just get a freind to do a personal gap reference.

That could be a way out of it as long as you didnt do that job for longer that a year!!!:ok:

I would be far more inclined to be totally honest and upfront with your potential future employers. I'm sure that you are not the first person ever to be dismissed from a previous post, and I suspect that your potential employer may be able to assist with some advice to help you get around the situation. However, it may also be too much like hard work for some of our HR friends.

Lying in your application, particularly about material facts like previous dismissal from employment, would almost certainly lead to dismissal if it subsequently came to light, and then you would have two dismissals to worry about - one for dishonesty.

Yes I suppose he's right I have never been dismissed so don;t reall have that much experience!!

Yeah, definately honesty being the best policy. Was there for 3 years until i came to blows with a new manager (not fisticuffs!!).
I was just wondering what a prospective employer would be asking, i mean, if its just a case of asking if i've worked there for the past 3 years then all is well and good, if its asking for a bit more detail then we could have problems! Methinks, maybe i could get HR to confirm i was actually working there and then maybe a personal charactor reference from another manager...? does anyone know the system...?

A company I worked for went bankrupt so got a letter from the inland revenue to prove id been paying taxes and that was sufficient so maybe you could go down that road

be totally honest...I was in exactly the same boat. an employer didnt want to give me a reference as we didn't see eye to eye which resulted in my resignation. EZY simply get a gap reference from someone you have known for 5 years or more, to verify that you worked there. honestly is definately the best policy. we are all human right?

An employer cannot refuse to give a reference under UK Employment Law. They are oblidged to confirm that you were employed between date A and date B. They are not oblidged to explain reasons for ending the employment.

One option is to cover it with a gap reference, as craic1510 mentions.
