I dont like to be a know it all on here...i'm usually asking for information but when it comes to airline food and the catering side of things...im the guy to ask!!! :-)

I think something which is unfortunate is customers blaming or associating a bad experience with an airline because of the food they get. Airlines rely on other catering companies all around the world in different ports and quite often prepare their catering themselves. Sometimes there may be a limited number of catering services available to an airline at certain ports and the airline itself will almost certainly have to use poor quality services. Customers dont see this they just blame the airline/flight attedants itself.

We also know that the airline is responsible for this in many ways but it would be so much better if people viewed catering as separate to the overall service.

When it comes to catering a good catering company is consistent. That is good quality meals are delivered ALL the time. That way a customer can say I like flying X Airline because they always have good food. It unfortunately only takes one bad meal to stop a customer from flying with an airline again. Yet that airline may have normally great quality meals.

I must say some airlines have :yuk: on order for their catering...and it may not be the cheapest either!!!

I have to agree with QFMike here,

We used to use a company called GateGourmet and they are an international catering company. The standards varied so much from port to port and the same dish made in one port turned out so different in another port. Food was fantastic in one place but dreadful in another. CaterAir are another one that comes to mind with variations on product, even from city to city.
Some ports are great for their catering eg DPS, JKT, HKG but others fail miserably. Japan seen to provide much smaller portions and I have found the US to be terrible. But I guess it all gets down to the particular airline and how much they are willing to spend on each meal. Not all foods cost the same in other countries so they have to limit the amount they spend.

I just thought this website was great to compare different meals around the world. It's still interesting to see the standard unrecognisable curry or stew that was so prevalent in the '80's still being served up.

I still rate Cathay as having the best food in Economy class, for both quantity, quality and presentation, especially when they did a profile restaurant from Hong Kong, and food was based on menu's from a feature restaurant every month. I'm not sure if they still do that but it was a great concept and something different from the usual economy meal. Also a great way to market restaurants in Hong Kong, although the menu was ex HKG when people had already been there so I don't know what it actually did for the restaurant involved.

Cathay is a good all rounder they have a great economy pack. Red cups on a firm green tray witha bamboo print liner. They use a strong plastic cutlery set that dont bend or snap!

The biggest economy hot meals would have to be Thai and Malaysian. They have a big casserole dish served to the hilt!

I noticed that meals from Japan are significantly smaller and Japan Airlines have small intricately detailed meals. They no doubt taste good and look good but yes probably not the best for someone starving! The best thing about JAL is their first class La Dolce Patisserie fine first class chocolates!!! Many good comments are written on their meal boxes for kids....they write Thankyou/Very Yummy/The best. This is great to see...some airlines have an untouched meal that says: I would not feed this to my dog/Is the meal a Visy meal too? recycled?


Those Qantaslink cheese biscuit stick things are YUM!!!!

OMG, Just found the Royal Brunei Camel peanuts. :} YUUM!

I remember getting off the plane with 10 packs to see me through the transit in BWN.

Anyone know where you can buy them in Australia ?
