The way Crew speak to their Crew Controllers

Just witnessed some horrific exchanges between an innocent crew controller just doing her job and a no1 cabin attendant that refused his duties because of not wanting to fly on that aircraft type, despite being checked out!!

What gives them the right to be so ***** rude? If you don't like it do something else instead!!!

Your thoughts??

bacardi walla 2nd Feb 2004 16:56

so you work for Ryanair then hey

Used to work in crewing myself, and some of the confrontations that I had amazed me. It seemed that people just didn't understand CAP 371 or their scheduling agreements. I appreciate that crewing has an ultimate ruling over quality of life in some instances, but as was said earlier it goes with the territory, and there is never a need to swear at someone simply for doing their job. Fortunately, our phone conversations were recorded so anything that was said could be replayed.

On the other hand, there were an amazing few who were always helpful, no matter what time of the day and that really made crewing easier!

I think It was great experience working in crewing myself as when I eventually become aircrew, I will know what im letting myslef in for!

trolleylad 3rd Feb 2004 05:48

I am leaving my airline due to the sheer incompetence of the crewing dept. They speak to us like they are above us, fail on a regular basis to communicate crew changes and then call you, asking why you have missed a flight that you weren't aware of in the first place. Then they have the cheek to hang up the phone on you rather than admit their mistakes. Also called my friend out for a flight an hour after he had landed from a night LPA, and called him a liar when he protested and informed them he had just returned. Just one of the regular cock ups we have to endure.

I have never had the misfortune to work with such an arrogant bunch of fools who clearly are in the wrong job.

Those of you joining an up and coming charter at LGW/MAN/GLA this season beware.........crew morale is at it's lowest and with these incompetents in charge things can only get worse!!!

baboy 3rd Feb 2004 17:24

I understand what a great job crewing and ops departments do, but as said before , the abuse can come from these departments aswell.
I work for a BA Franchise at LGW and can honestly say there are only 2 nice people in our crewing/ops department, they smile and acknowledge you when they see you, are friendly and will always try to help you.
Then there is one crewing girl who is a nasty, rude, unhelpful and thats on one of her good days! There is also one ops guy who has great pleasure in calling you out at 4am and starts laughing down the phone... not what you need when you were just woken out of a deep sleep.
I now only try to call crewing/ops when I know the 2 nice people are there.
So it does work both ways.

I work in a position where i deal with Qantas crewing every day. I have never had any problems with them and are always more than helpful and friendly, my department has even been out for drinks to meet them rather than just talk to them on the phone. I did hear one morning though a CSM (Purser) was querying her pick up time from the hotel and something happened and all i remember hearing was the CSM saying to the girl at crewing, "there is no need to be rude, if i was three i'd slap you right now!" This is the one and only disgruntled time i've heard something like this happen, but generally everything is fine.

Nothing against Europe or anything like that, but i don't think i'd like to work for any airline in Europe/UK ever. There seems to be nothing but problems. We had an English show in Australia called "Mile High" based on an airline called "fresh Air", you've probably heard of it. To me, that and reality airport shows we've seen from the UK, the position of Flight Attendant seems to be shown as a job with no class. Not for me. But different situations suit different people.

Just my thoughts

MaximumPete 3rd Feb 2004 22:12

I've met some very good crewing officers, Helen B is a fine example.

Sadly there were a lot of incompetents who try to blame the crews fo their mistakes. I resorted to taping every telephone conversation. They knew every conversation was taped as there was a warning on my taped answerphone message. You may ask what happened to the master tape down at HQ. That had a habit of going "missing" when the crewing officer was in the wrong. I always sent a copy of my tape when there was a query and that had a habit of going "missing".

Lastly I had a different telephone number for crewing to ring me on which gave a different ring. I remember my next door neighbours' nine year old son telling me one morning that whilst I was out that the phone kept ringing, but "not to worry as it was only crewing"

Your all absolutely right, there are some complete idiots within operations deparments of some airlines, likewise there are crew that seem to WANT to cause trouble! It is interesting to think how things could be improved, as the constant battle between crewing/operations and the flying community does no one any favours. Sometimes crew showing an interest in the actual process of why people were given duties helps, as it then becomes obvious as to the reason they are being called. Obviously if the crewing/ops person is just plain rude then this wont help!

Whatever, the case, it seems a shame that there has to be swearing or rudeness from either party. This just doesnt get anyone anywhere!

Dear Trolleylad

Dear Trolleylad,
Well mr ****, those are fairly strong views. Can i start by saying how delighted we were to recently recieve your resignation, it was a rare example of you actually being contactable. It was getting boring writing SICK and ABSENT and REFUSE on your roster, so to put RESGD on instead made a lovely change.
Yes we did call you and ask you why you hadnt reported for a flight, and obviously the guilt of being found out made you go sick for the next two days. I mean, you wouldnt have gone sick as some kind of revenge would you?? That would be so immature so i cant believe that... And immediately after your leave too. You know the week we changed 6 times for you....
Anyway, hope the last two weeks shoot by, because we now feel guilty that we are denying your next employer the pleasures of your service. I see you are going to BA. Well u know how we crewing people talk to each other....
Love and kisses and good luck, pal.

Edited staff number.
crundale, please do not disclose personal details such as staff numbers.

Oops......
the words 'shot' and 'foot' immediately spring to mind

Q-Tee 7th Feb 2004 16:55

hmmm, the only thing I have a problem with at qf crewing is the lack of consistency ..... you do them favours constantly, yet when you ask them for a small one - the answer is always no !

It doesnt make me hate them, it just makes me never do favours for them anymore, not even if they "will have to cancel the flight" like I was told recently ....yeah right ;)

BlueEagle 7th Feb 2004 17:30

I found that the Crewing Officers who could handle the job, think on their feet etc. were always cheerful and polite, the ones that caused any kind of friction were usually the ones that had a job to keep up and sometimes let the pressure get to them.
Just my 2d worth!

SPFlyer 8th Feb 2004 03:52

As a crewing bod, I find this job is as easy and hassle free as you make it.

There will always be a few idiots in every single airline, that no matter what change you give them, it will be unfair and unreasonable.

On the other hand, if you speak to people as you wish to be spoken to yourself, you will find your job a whole lot more enjoyable. When a crew member questions the change, as long as you have the knowledge and tact to give them the GENUINE reasons, they will respect you that much more for it, even if it's not what they really want to hear.

Those that really kick off can go and speak to the cabin staff manager or CP, im not here to take sh1t from crews who wont or dont want to listen.

And if crews do favours for you, dont forget it. They certainly ( and quite rightly) wont, and it will only come back and bite you in the @rse if you play dumb!!!!

Baron buzz 8th Feb 2004 04:13

SP FLyer, as an ex crewing bod myself, I can only totally agree with you and back up all your comments!

SHTTKR 8th Feb 2004 04:48

As a current crewing bod ,ditto baron buzz:p

Bodum 10th Feb 2004 17:41

Well for any Qantas schedulers on here, know this:

You all do a fantastic job :ok: In my years of flying, maybe once or twice ive encountered a smart @ on the phone, but otherwise have always found crewing pleasant.

Sure, like everyone else we have had our bad eggs, but a thing called karma often takes care of that ;)

srs what? 10th Feb 2004 23:54

Can only echo what the other Crewing Bods have already said. You really wouldn't believe some of the stories we could all tell you...infact maybe we should.

Chiney 11th Feb 2004 10:55

I'd love to hear those stories! Start posting, friend!

srs what? 11th Feb 2004 19:04

Let's start with the silly ones:

"Can you tell me what time the 9 o'clock bus leaves"

"I'm going to be late, I forgot when I worked out what time to set my alarm that I needed to get up and get dressed etc before I got in the car and drove to work"

I'll have to try and remember some more.
