what's up with???

hi what's up with this??
Don't they need Euro-language speakers??

The job will involve continuous contact with many people who do not speak English and who only speak one of the languages of our major destinations. Therefore, you must be fluent in speaking and reading one of the following: Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Tagalog or Korean, as well as being able to speak and read English fluently. Fluency in other Chinese dialects will also be considered.

ANA&JAL recruited Euro speakers so I don't know what they are looking for???

Cathay prides itself on being an Asian airline and uses entirely Asian cabin crew; this is one of the reasons they are the best airline in the world. Since Euro-legislation doesn't allow them to specify race they are doing the next best thing and specifying language ability.

It would be a sad day indeed if Cathay couldn't find a way of avoiding the "miserable fat granny" type cabin crew common on most Euro/US airlines.

The Euro crew on JAL and ANA are not old at all. I have no idea what you are talking about...
Doubt if they will find enough people wanting and being able to work for them

I think you'll be surprised. CX run a similar base out of Vancouver with no apparant difficulty (and no miserable fat grannies).

I can't see anything on their site.
Any idea what kind of pay and conditions they are offering?

Go to http://www.cathaypacific.com
Select "Careers / Job Search" from the menu at the left.
Select "Flight Attendant" press "Search Jobs"

Application online is possible. Closing date is 31 January.

But unless you can read and write one of the languages specified you will be wasting your time.

So does that mean you don't need to speak an asian language?

mixed crew????

I thought Singapore Airlines and Emirates were recently voted best airlines in the world and Emirates has a very mixed cabin crew department of all ages and nationalities.Emirates must be doing something right with all that profit they are making.Ciao.

Monarchgirl,

I don't see why it should mean that ... a rapidly increasing number of "Europeans" (which I take to me "caucasian" as used by Silberfuchs) speak Mandarin or Japanese.

CX are notoriously lousy employers. The Vancouver base is staffed by Asians that want staff travel to their home countries. Whatever they promise at interviews with regard to conditions , salary and roster will be pure fiction. This job will suit some , but make sure you go in with eyes wide open!

It's curious then that such an allegedly crap employer always has hundreds of people applying per job when they advertise for cabin crew in Hong Kong, where most of the applicants are in their home country.

From a passenger's perspective CX crew are amongst the best in the world; far, far preferable to the average European or US crew: they don't disappear to the galley for hours on end; you never hear them moaning and whinging while standing around ignoring the call button; and they don't call me things like "sweetie" (a particularly American trait).

If CX gets some half decent slots on LHR-NYC then they will be full all the time - particularly in the premium classes. I fly there on my own money, and I would happily pay a premium to fly CX across the pond.
