New Budget QF Airline & Recruitment

Hi Brothers & Sisters
I'am going to a briefing to day to find out about the upcoming training requirements for the next business quarter. The new LCC will feature heavly in question time. I'll post everything I can on Thursday evening SYD time as I have had a heap of calls and private messages from PPruners. It's important we stick together in QF & QF link as things are about to change forever and cool heads are required at the moment. Some of the posts on other threads have been very informative and show a well educated group of people use this site. Fingers crossed :D I'am sure it will work out for everybody on lists, currently employeed & wannabe's.

Ok guys this is what I know as of the 231003

LCC will make a segnificant push into the market in May 2004, quote: "all guns blazing, taking no prisoners"
Start up numbers will be around 300 crew, it's ADL or BNE for home with BNE looking good. With the success of the LCC the company will start the restructure of S/H within 2/3 years the LCC will be the domminent domestic arm of QF. S/H as we know it will reduce in size and fly mid haul eventually joining with L/H but under seperate awards for mid & long respectively known as mainline crew. New airline has a great name but has to be ok'd by board next month, I can tell you then(sorry)
As far as recruitment is concerned L/H are forcasting a 9% growth next 18 months and as of yesterday they were still going to use short listers as per there recruitment (don't know when). Mam short listed people will be used shortly with classes expected just after xmas.
No external permanent recruitment for up to 2 years, only mam crew, who will work there way into fulltime positions as they become available.
Thats the latest info but it may and probably will change and be tweeked a few dozen times between now and then.
If I get anymore info I'll post it straight away, also look for no more tranfers between divisions after 2004.
Hope this helps a few people .....regards PP

PEANUT PUSHER

Do you mean no external recruitment for the LCC start up operation, or just QF long and shorthaul?

OZcabincrew 23rd Oct 2003 23:19

Thanks for that info Peanut Pusher, greatly appreciated!

Where you have said that L/H have forcasted a 9% growth in the next 18 months and as of yesterday will still be using shortlisters as part of their recruitment. Are these QF shortlisters or MAM only shortlisters?

You also said MAM shortlisters will be used shortly with classes just after xmas, will these people be used for long haul, short haul or the LCC?

Fingers crossed that us QF shortlisters will have a chance at our dreams!!!!

Once again, thanks for all the info, look forward to hearing more.

Thanks

SydGirl 24th Oct 2003 04:54

Thanks PP that is great info!

However now I'm a tad confused.
You said L/H were going to use shortlisters as per their recruitment and also MAM shortlisted casuals. This I'm a bit confused about, are you talking about the shortlisters from the recruitment drive around a year or so ago? If so, then aren't they on the shortlist for the shorthaul division? I was of the understanding that the recruitment for short and longhaul was done slightly differently (please correct me if this is not so).

Also, MAM casuals are also part of the shorthaul division, so I still am not getting how they are going to become part of longhaul.

You later mentioned that there will be no external permanent recruitment for up to 2 years "only mam crew, who will work there way into fulltime positions as they become available." - if MAM crew (who are technically employed by a labour hire company) are made permanent, then doesn't that construe external permanent recruitment? Just need to check on that detail for our QFLink colleagues who are concerned about their progression (or lack thereof) rights.

Not meaning to interrogate you, but obviously this LCC will have a huge effect on new and current employees alike, so any detail is most appreciated.

Thanks for the info PP greatly appreciated.

I think what PP is saying is that current QF waitlisters will be called for position in LH as they are projecting 9% growth. These positions may or may not be permanent. Could be casual or fixed term.

To date MAM have never supplied crew to the LH division (except during the strike) and Im not sure if they can under their EBA. MAM has only ever been used in Short haul.

Therefore current MAM shortlisters will be called for casual positions within short haul.

No permanent external recruitment means exactly that positions offered in short haul will be casual through MAM and if permanent positions arise they go to MAM casuals (if the number exceeds 32 than regional career progression is activated).

PP will clarify Im sure but from reading PP's post I think that is the general idea.

leemo 24th Oct 2003 08:57

GalleyHag,

I don't think there is a clause anywhere in the LH EBA that MAM casuals cannot be used in LH. I'm sure the company can use whoever they like as casuals.

Let just hope those on the wait lists get called soon.

Fingers x'ed

leemo

SydGirl 24th Oct 2003 09:26

Thanks GH that really helps.

Leemo there is nothing prohibiting MAM casuals from working in longhaul as per the longhaul FAAA agreement. In fact in clause 9 of the L/H EBA it states that casual FA's can be utilised as long as the company meets several conditions (which I won't go into!).

However there is no industrial agreement between MAM and the longhaul division of the FAAA, like there is with MAM and the shorthaul division of the FAAA, so I would think that would have to be sorted out at some stage if MAM casuals were going to be used on a "permanently casual" basis in L/H.

Anyway here's hoping to more and better opportunities for all of us!

GalleyHag 24th Oct 2003 09:48

Leemo/SydGirl

I wasnt sure if they could or couldnt lets hope they can get a start in LH at some point.

I remember reading some of the info put out during the strike by the FAAA international division and they were saying that only an approved labour hire company can provide f/a's to LH and as far as they were concerned at the time MAM was not approved by them (but that didnt stop QF did it).

TSSOV 24th Oct 2003 14:06

Mam?

i was just wondering... what or who is MAM? it has been mentioned in some threads and i have never heard of it/them before.
thanks...

UpperDeckRight 24th Oct 2003 14:12

Longhaul wont be getting a huge influx of casual crew anytime shortly ..... the longhaul EBA has the limit of casual crew (network wide) capped at 32 casuals, they cant hire any more than that without breaching the EBA ( as far as I am aware ).

GalleyHag 24th Oct 2003 14:13

Maurice Alexander Management (MAM) provide casual flight attendants to Qantas.

Q-T 24th Oct 2003 16:08

Thanks for all the info PP, very interesting!!!

Do you happen to know any info on the current S/H bases, which you are saying will eventually be mid haul, will they will be down sized due to the LCC???
For example Bne- especially if BNE becomes the LCC new home...
Thanks Q-T
