BA have clearly stated that they do not wish to take any money off of current employees, agreed?
I think BA may have been being just a little bit "economical with the truth" when they said that. If they think they can get away with it, they will.

BA exists as a premium airline and does very well in that niche.

through their teeth, to bully and to act illegally, it's a pity that Cabin Crew are in the middle of it
ba.husband, where has BA acted illegally in this dispute over imposition? Both parties have been before the beak several times now and BA has walked out smiling on every occasion.

fruitbat,

This is a time for calm and careful action. What would be the point of BA behaving in the vengeful manner that you suggest? IMHO it would further alienate an already fearful and angry CC. (Even though their reps are largely responsible for this state!) In addition BA now hold ALL the levers of power and clearly will use them to obtain the necessary savings WITHOUT causing the damage that your advocated actions would precipitate.

That may be so, but at this time, the statement holds true.

Unite comment on trial today of BA cabin crew strikebreaker

OK, now it's relevant...!

...and for Unite to use this angle in the dispute I think is unreasonable.

I don't see that it's any more unreasonable than Unite trying to steamroller a pay cut through, on top of an effective tax raise!
"Temporary" paycut or not, it will end with less money in the accounts of the employees month on month. Glad everyone's happy about that then...

Unites arrogance is breathtaking, and the contempt the members are being treated with only makes me feel pity for them. They're only a number after all.

Commenting on the court appearance of a BA employee alleged to be involved in a terror plot, and who had volunteered to work as cabin crew in the event of any strike, Len McCluskey, assistant general secretary said: "Today's charges illustrate absolutely the serious dangers of recruiting a strike-breaking crew to defeat a workforce. BA's responsibility to all passengers is to put every effort into securing a negotiated settlement, not risk safety with fast-tracked strikebreakers

"This only serves to underline the concerns we've raised with BA regarding health, safety and security issues throughtout this dispute."
Trying to suggest that volunteers are inherently more of a security risk is beneath contempt. As ALL aiside workers go through the same security checks irrespective of whether they are G4S, BA, VS or BA volunteers. So IF Mr McCluckwit is suggesting that somehow UNITE members enhance the onboard security he is sadly deluded. Worse still he is attempting to make cheap political capital in a very serious arena. It displays not only how weak the UNITE position has become that now no stunt is beneath them, but also what a short sighted man he is. Is he so certain that the police have never charged a BASSA member with a criminal act that has lead to them losing their airside pass?

I'm guessing by the lack of comms from BASSA/UNITE, that the 10am meeting must still be going on.

They must be having one H£ll of a ding dong if it's taking them this long to come up with a next move.

Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall...

Looney Len - " Right Chaps, all out, 12 days of Easter, let's show Villie that we mean business"

LaLa " Heeya Heeya"

Tony Woodley - "err no chaps bad idea, TCGB won't want us screwing up his election, plus let's face it, you two have totally B@lls’d this thing up.."

Looney - " No Tony, the workers have spoken.. down with the capitalist scum. Down with Villie and Billie"

LaLa "Heeya Heeya"

and on... and on.... and on................................... AND ON....

CB

Apologies for the the low brow dialogue, I couldn't quite get in the same frame of mind as a leftwing militant unionist crackpot.

Crash and Burn - they have been busy writing this: -

(BASSA) Press Statement - 11th March

We must urge British Airways to put its customers first, not in the form of press friendly sound bites but by their actions.

We have absolutely no wish to cause any disruption to British Airways and more importantly for our customers.

Cabin Crew are proud of our airline. We implore Mr Walsh to be part of that pride and to listen to our collective voice, not damage the international reputation of the greatest airline in the world.

We are taking this opportunity to ask him to reconsider the formal offer of cuts we have made and to accept the sacrifices that we and our members are willing to make in order to help British Airways to protect on board service levels for its customers, and so prevent industrial action.

To say that this is about the so-called “survival of the airline” is simply not true. Even by their own accounting figures, which we strongly believe are highly creative, the difference between each of the sides’ proposal is just £10 million. This may sound like a significant sum but for perspective; compare £10 million pounds to a £3 billion pounds a year fuel bill - or the £500 million BA were recently ordered to pay out in fines.

It would appear that far more than that sum has already been spent on trying to break any dispute in the form of wet leased aircraft and blocking of seats on other carriers etc.

Press reports indicate a British Airways employee accused of acts of terrorism, was also one of Mr Walsh’s strike breaking volunteers who were employed to work as temporary cabin crew.

What price does safety have - £10 million?

This is simply not about “cost cutting” - it is about “union busting” at any cost and that truth is now finally there for all to see.

What company in their right mind would refuse the offer of a pay cut from its own staff to protect the health, safety and service offered to its customers?

Before ordinary peoples travel plans are unnecessarily inconvenienced we hope that common sense will prevail and that our offer is reconsidered. The deadline for calling industrial action is very close. Mr Walsh should not squander that time.
From above: - "Press reports indicate a British Airways employee accused of acts of terrorism, was also one of Mr Walsh’s strike breaking volunteers who were employed to work as temporary cabin crew."

Incorrect I think, he wished to be, had applied, but was not, according to the court reports. A rather large difference.
BA dont issue security clearence anyway, indeed the government gave him a passport, that makes them more responsible for the potential risk here than BA I could suggest.

What absolute desparation! An appalling note - and to accue BA of press soundbites. Missleading, dangerous and a last ditch attempt to manipulate the popular press and save a tiny bit of loony left wing face. Members should be horrified by this sort of language

I feel sick reading that - after the attempt to strike over christmas for 12 days to now take the high ground claiming to only have the best interests of customers at heart!
As for the pay cut offer - where was that 12 months ago?????
Desperate last minute scrabbling - reluctance to call the strike cause they know it will have little impact.
Its even more pathetic than I feared - its too humiliating and cringeable to watch!

Even if their proposal was ONLY £10 million short (which I don't think is the truth) why should that be sufficient? Every other department agreed to permanent cuts and met their targets in FULL.

Why do BA CC always think they are a special case and should be given special treatment?

I Guess from the above release from BASSA, that there will be no strike dates today... the Militant Lefty's have been blocked by the more moderates.

BASSA/UNITE have blinked... well actually they've bottled it.

Good Catch

They caught the would-be assassin before he got anywhere near an aircraft or passengers.
Well done to all concerned.

I apologise, but I have to comment on this section from the BASSA Press Statement:
We have absolutely no wish to cause any disruption to British Airways and more importantly for our customers.
  1. Apart from calling the CC out on strike, of course, which [notionally] prevents BA from operating. No disruption there, then?
  2. I have no recollection of customers ever being mentioned by BASSA previously. Perhaps they've all gone away, as forward bookings imply? Those that remain WILL be disrupted, despite BA's best efforts.

Am I unfair in suggesting that this is "standard Union phraseology" with no substance whatsoever? The Union appears to be determined to cause the MAXIMUM disruption to both the Company and the passengers, in order to assert its dominance over the workplace, the company, the investors and indeed anyone else who disagrees with their interpretation of facts.

I am so sorry for all the good people mired in this farce.

Open to interpretation maybe, as technically, bassas "customers" are those who pay it £15 per month for the service of "representation".

TorC, Good point. Why not spend £10 per month on legal representation insurance in the event of needing that at work and the other £5 on having a few beers ! More worthwhile than being a member of BASSA during this terrible time.
