Cannard, you'll be right mate!!!

I reckon the next time I turn up to an open day they'll just say "oh for crying out loud have a job already, shut up... we can't take it any more..." bwahahaha

Jani - AWESOME!! Well done!! Congratulations! I am so proud of you! Emirates is one of the hardest airliens to get in to - so you should be so very, very proud of yourself! Let us all know when you leave and what it's like when you get over there ... can't wait to har all about it!!

Cannard, I have my fingers and toes crossed for you - I am sure that you will get in no probs at all ... then you can take Jani out for a drink - lol.

Skysista ... lol! Sounds right to me! Must be our turn next time right?

Thank you all!!!!
the truth is that I probably couldnt have done it without your help... with all ur answers to my many silly questions.... thank you so much!!
I hope to see u all in dubai one day, hopefully very soon!!!
Cannard, let us know if you get the call... it would be so great if we could meet in dubai... They said that my flight ticket is for the 6th of April... so if they call u soon, we could probably be at same training course... that would be awesome.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank u all for every single advice you have nicely written here.... it has been of so much help to many of us....
I wish the recruiters could see how nice people you all are, and choose you in the next open day!!!! and probably they will!!!
wish you the best of luck!!!
Jani

For all you wannabes out there, may I direct you to the middle east forum and read 'Dubai, the city that cares'. I don't wish to put anyone off and I know that this sort of thing can happen anywhere but just a heads up. It didn't get as much coverage as it should have in the press so just something to be aware of.

I have just had a look at that thread and some people have a very valid point about how dangerous LOTS of places are in the world. In little old Brissie there is lots of drink spiking etc. The moral of the story is to try to be as careful as possible and really make sure you have mates with you or a phone with you all the time.

I am concerned about the traffic situation in Dubai as I have been there before and cars are CRAZY. Again though, all you can do is live as carefully as possible and try to respect others.

It's a big decision to move to the other side of the world away from your family and I'm sure any of us willing to do that are well aware of the inherant risks of living in a country where we are guests.

Bymon, I remember in one of the deletd EK threads that this subject got quite an airing, and peole sharing their own experiences and tips etc. But thanks for the heads up anyway.

You can never be too careful in any city, which I am sure is what the new recruits will be doing in taking the time to research where they are going and perhaps talking to people already there...

Angel Need an advice...

Hi everyone,

I will be attending an open day in Toronto and wanted to know if by any chance someone could tell me how long this thing can last? Should I plan to stay there for a couple days considering the fact that I have to drive about 5 hours to get there?

After reading many posts, I notice that people are oftenly asked to come back the next day for prelims... Do you think it would be possible to drive back home and wait for their call? Then, if I'm lucky enough to be shortlisted I can come back later during the course of the week... The O.D. is on Wednesday, therefore I'll have to miss work... If I could go back on Saturday it would be perfect...

According to your experiences, is that something that could work out?

I have also heard that on some occasions they do the prelims on the same day, which would be great, is that true?

Thanks for your advice! It's my first Emirates O.D. and I really look forward to it! After reading all of your posts, especially SkySista's, I really think that I'm well prepared!

Thanks again!

open day in lisbon

hey everyone
my friend is going to the open day in lisbon, which i think is this march, 25th. i'd like to ask a few questions:

firstly, what is the difference between an Open Day and a Global Assessment Day? if someone goes to an open day, as far as i understand, and they get through to the next stage, do they get called to go the next day to the same place? cos if not, then to go to one of those global assessment days my friend would have to travel to a major city, eg london, which would obviously be quite costly....

and also, is it mandatory to wear knee-high skirts? my friend is going in a very nice formal black suit - though not plain black, it is rly nice actually...lol. my point is, she really wants to go with trousers, as she feels more comfortable like that, and they dont make her look bad at all, on the contrary. do u think it would be too bad for her to go with trousers instead of a skirt? would appreciate your help and advice!

Ladies - Knee length skirt / dress with skin coloured stockings.

Wish you all luck!!!
filipehm: your friend HAS to wear a skirt. See above post.
I also had a similiar letter sent to me just before my interviews, many moons ago!
Thats what EK are asking.... and i'm sure it doesn't look good if, from the beginning, applicants can't follow a simple instruction.
Ooh ooh ooh..... tell your friend to wear red lipstick... i know it sounds funny.. But my friends 'dressed' me for the interview (both were with EK at the time) and i got the job.
Of course the ONLY reason i got the job was cos i was wearing red lipstick and pearls... HAHAHA.

hi
thanks for the help on the dess code! i've told my friend about the red lipstick and the skirt... lol but she's really against the skirt tho... lol let's hope i can convince her...

now ive also got another question. about the open day in lisbon, do they conduct it in english or in the lang of the local country, ie portuguese?
and also, in the open day, ive read here in the thread but im not completely sure.... apparantly they tell u on the day if they want u to come back on the next day right? and recruitment goes on for 3 days, e.g. in the following 2 days after the open day, is that right or am i totally confused? so my friend should be taking the next 2 days off if she's called to return?

and also, what is the difference between a global assessment day and an open day? could anyone clarify that for me? thanks a lot!!

Hi Filipehm,

The recruiters will speak in English and only in English during the whole process. I would actually recommend your friend, not to speak portuguese with the rest of the people when the recruiters are in front, i mean, if they are doing tests or group activities or whatever, they should speak in english even though they all speak portuguese, coz when i attended the open day, they mentioned it, and said to us that we should get used to it since during the 5 weeks of training we would only be permited to speak English.... I would also say to her, that she really but REALLY should wear a skirt suit, the recruiters themselves will tell your friend if she gets successful to the second day... My process lasted for 3 days.. so She should ask for at least three days off from work...
I am not possitive about the assessment/open day thing, but as i recall, the assessment day was only to be attended by people who had been invited, it is, those who got an email from the emirates saying they wanted to interview them.. and an open day is for everybody who wants to show up and hand their cv.. that is why they reffer to it as "open".
Hope my information is correct, and it is useful somehow....
My best wishes to ur friend... JANI

Braking the 3 year Contract

Hi,
I just came back from DXB 4 weeks ago after 3,5 years with EK. It was a nice time but not as good as they try to sell it, so be aware ... Life is different down there! But there is now fee if you donīt stay 3 years. During probation your notice period is 1 week and afterwards its 1 month and they donīt charge you for anything. But let me tell you as an ex insider .. the last 6 month of 2005 1.200 people left and this year already up to nearly 600 .... its all not confirmed and even though conditions are improving its still not like working for an airline with a union, like in Europe !! For example: the last month I was working there I always did the 9 day DXB-SIN-BNE-AKL trip, came back in the morning (that day was rest) and then after 2 days off operating early morning a 14hr non-stop trip to JFK !! I did that 3 month in a row and I can tell you its no fun !! After more than one year in DXB you can be happy if you manage to sleep more than 5hrs a nite as all flights are nite dep. and there is no crew rest on board (only on the 340-500) and depending on the Senior sleeping, reading, etc. on empty seats normally is not allowed !! But its a nice experience for a limited period of time ... have a plan to leave after a year or so and I can recomand it ... but not as an career !!!

Hope it helps some of you being in doubt, feel free to ask !! ALways happy landings .....

Just left Emirates ...

Hi,
I just left Emirates 4 weeks ago an I am on hold with NZ (LHR Base) and was accepted with QF a year ago and lost the number to contact them. Could anyone tell me if QF is still recruiting and how to contact them? Also if NZ is really recruiting again between Feb. and Apr. (was a gossip when I was still in DXB). Would be great if anyone could give some info ... I am with Austrian now and really don´t like it ... one year of european trips with hardly any layover is not great after coming from EK !!!
Feel free to ask me about EK !!

Thank you .....

Pan Am was the best anyway !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi
yep qantas is recruiting for their new lhr base. the site is www.qantascabincrewuk.com, you can see all the requirements etc there.

but why did you want to leave emirates in the first place? as far as one can see they seem to be a pretty good company to work for... how was it like working for them?

lol whoops i just saw your post before now, guess u already answered the question...

just one question. at the emirates site they tell you to register for the open day in lisbon. however, i dont think this should b necessary as i guess not many pppl r going to be attending, and on the other hand, my friend prefers to hand in everything personally on the day, as opposed to send in through the online application form, which takes AGES!! what do you think? should i just go on the day, earlier than the starting time just to be on the safe side, or should i apply first through the site??

fish new here

Hello there...

New here on this topic, and already awaiting the results from my final interview....
If I had known I would have read this thread before the open day, but even without it, you still have a chance....!
For people who really to prepare themselves in the best way possible, one thing; it's impossible! The most important thing is just to be yourselve. And if that's not good enough, well, sounds stupid maybe, but would you really like to work for a company in which you can not be yourselve?
Even more because you base your entire life around that company, which is quite a big step.
Of course, you should come prepared, so make sure that you visit the EK website loads of times, make sure you wear the right outfit, and make sure that you make the best impression possible. Remember grandma's wise words "You never get a second chance to make a first impression".
And very true; you have to 'fit' in. But more important; the company must fit you as well !

Now I am awaiting a phonecall/letter/e-mail to get the results of my final interview, and I'm really nervous about it. I still think that if you have only one freckle in the wrong spot, they can and will reject you....
So I'll just wait.... and wait .... and wait... and wait some more...
4 to 6 weeks waiting is really long if you want something so bad!!!

And just go to one of their open days, you don't have to register already.

Good luck to you all!

Ciao

Dont worry about waiting 4-6 weeks

its a lot quicker now!

after missing the phone call last week, and not calling them back straight away (im still not sure if this was a coincidence or not) I have received my second rejection email.

of course i'll always wonder had i heard the phone ring when it did (almost exactly the same time of the day they sent the email) if my result would be very different. but oh well, what can you do?

on the plus side, seems everyone that had go accepted will be flying out on thursday, they werent really given a lot of choice about it. so i wouldnt of been able to pack up my life in the two weeks anyways. it would of been nice to get a big yes though.

dont know if i'll try again when they come back (some one mentioned 2 months?) i'll see how i feel on the day (read: see how old i feel).

but to the rest of you, good luck and keep trying, it might not be the best job in the world, and you may grow to hate it. it will be a once in a lifetime experience, unless of course your a career crew, and want to do it till your old and grey.

C
