British Airways Cabin Crew - Japanese Speakers

Hi there,

Apologies if this has been discussed already, but I'd appreciate any information on this.

A friend of my - a Japanese national - was interested in applying for the vacancy currently being advertised by BA for Japanese speaking Cabin Crew. He's not an EEA passport holder so has been told, quite rightly, he cannot apply with out the right to live and work in the UK.

Is it possible to apply for some kind of work permit for this kind of role?

Out of interest, either for BA or Virgin - are the Japanese speaking crew usually Japanese nationals who have the right to work in the EU, or are they EU nationals?

Many thanks indeed for your time.

Some airlines such as Lufthansa for example...

Will recruit language speakers on a non National contract.. IE they employ Indians on a separate non German contract that has very limited scope, they are employed in India not Germany.

Maybe other airlines do the same to get the various languages.

Japanese Speakers will be recruited to be based in Japan so you don't need an EU permit. You will need a work permit for Japan and you will have a Japanese contract.

No that is not correct.

BA have up until recently always recruited Japanese Speakers from Japan, based in Tokyo, on a seperate Japanese contract and working to the Worldwide Crew agreements.

Since starting up a new fleet called Mixed Fleet they are not using the Japanese crew based in Tokyo on the Haneda flight, which is operated by the new Mixed Fleet crew, as they work to a different agreement.

Apparently for some Japanese legal reason, they cannot recruit new Japanese crew, on this different agreement, to operate the Haneda route with the Mixed Fleet crew. They are therefore recruiting some Japanese speaking crew based in the UK. This is why for these Japanese speaking cabin crew jobs you are required to have the right to live and work in the EU. You can be from any country as long as you speak Japanese and English and have the right to live and work in the EU and you will be living in the UK and working out of LHR on the Haneda route.
