Please be aware that there is a (very) long history of embittered QF staff hijacking existing PPRuNe threads to disseminate hate filled tirades against their employer. Nobody knows how justified their cause may be, and nobody has cared for a very long time: If you wish to read this kind of stuff, the Dunnunda forums on PPruNe are full of it - a long-standing billboard representing everything that is the worst about Australia and QF and showcasing none of the features that are attractive.

For those of you considering a new career in aviation in Australia, make your own decisions, but do try and think carefully first. In many cases, advice that you receive from existing staff may be tainted, or addressing a hidden agenda: Normally the moderators will delete obviously tainted posts, or just move them to the Dunnunda forums.

I have a question for those that have only recently attended AD's, either in Sydney or Melbourne.

Are you able to speak any language(s) other than English?

A friend of mine that works for QF Domestic seems to think they were looking for people that do in-fact speak more than one language but admits she may have it confused with the earlier Arabic hiring.

Applications opened again??

Hi all.

Just thought i would share that i noticed applications have re opened again on the Qantas careers website.. I was under the impression they had received too many applications and were still going through them for assessment days and interviews?

If any one missed out applying last time before it closed, now is probably a good time to submit in case they close it again?

Interesting to see how it all pans out in a few more weeks or months when it is all sorted and numbers are allocated etc.

RedLippy 22nd Jun 2013 19:12

Reopened? When did it close?

Since I applied after they'd sent the email about updating their careers website and registering new interest, the job status on my application page has never changed from "accepting job submissions".

When and where does it say it was closed and reopened?

Could it be to do with different states, I'm in NSW?

Prettyinpink 23rd Jun 2013 01:29

Well it was taken off the careers part of the Qantas website for current vacancies around the 24th May. So i am not sure how people could continue applying without the link? I assumed it was finished. I noticed the other night that it was re posted again around the 13th of June and it still has a link to the Qcca application now. I'm not sure when it ends this time/taken down. Qf staff have told me they are receiving emails about still working out new numbers and which bases are short etc.

I haven't heard about any more AD or interview dates etc..
If anyone has been to one recently, i would love to know.??

alyssa 26th Jun 2013 06:17

I would like to ask anyone who has been to any AD lately if they know if anyone of mature age had got through to the interview panel stage of the day. A family friend in her 40's is wanting to apply and woould be a great candidate for the position either domestic or international. She is a little hesitant to try and give it a go and I am trying to convince her otherwise.

deon85 26th Jun 2013 15:12

Tell her to go for it. At my AD there were a few "older" ladies who got through
They were really lovely as well... Tell your friend to apply :)

PMK 29th Jun 2013 11:17

Hi Alyssa
Tell your friend to go for it. I am in my early 40s and at my AD I made it through to panel interviews and also to reference checks. I didn't get the job but I'm positive still there's hope for us oldies!

Jackal717 29th Jun 2013 15:24

Hey PMK. I don't understand why you failed at the reference check stage. Did your referees give a bad comment about you? I think it is illegal that the referee that we ask for providing us reference give them a bad comment. Or am I missunderstanding?
Well I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get through. I would be so sad till death if i fail at the very end of the process. You mst handle this very well :)

alyssa 30th Jun 2013 06:36

Hi PMK,
And to all who replied. Pmk can you advise whether you had a medical done? Very strange they let you go at reference stage(sad for you).my relative has applied online for both domestic and QCCA. So proud of her. She is hesitant as she is in her late 40's. She wanted me to ask you how you found the whole experience and what customer service experience you have had. Also what questions you were asked in the interview. :)

PMK 30th Jun 2013 08:23

Hi Alyssa and Jackyl
The reference checks are no longer phonecalls. They email your referees a document with questions they usually ask on the phone. As it turned out my referees both sent me a copy of their responses. Their references were absolutely glowing, so I am not sure exactly what went wrong. I was an Ansett FA for a couple of years but since then I have been a teacher - so I guess my experience was not so relevant when there are thousands of people applying who have current and relevant hospitality experience.
At least I didn't actually get to the medical check stage (imagine paying all that money and then not getting the job).

But, I will keep trying! Good luck to you both, and your older applicant!

alyssa 1st Jul 2013 07:10

Pmk thanks for your reply. My friend has many years in hospitality so she does have that up her sleeve. As for me, i applied last year but was unsuccessful after the interview stage. I think i went in too over confident but thats ok i am now teaching english in Tokyo and loving it. Maybe in years to come I may re-apply.

Can anyone who has had a medical done advise what is involved. And Pmk what questions were you asked in the interview. Your reply is will be appreciated yet again.:)

Jackal717 1st Jul 2013 10:24

Hi PMK. thanks for replying. Mmmm now I am more confused with Qantas' requirements!! For what reason they rejected you since you have all the qualifications they require. If they didn't want you, why would they have held you till the reference check? But at least you are a cabin crew, you have more experience than the others. I wish you can step further to a better airlines.

Cheers

PMK 3rd Jul 2013 07:20

Hi Jackal
The questions asked were fairly standard for airline recruitment days:
Tell us about when you worked well in a team
Tell us about a time you had to deal with conflict
Tell us how you would deliver excellent customer service.
I was also asked to tell them a bit about myself and why I wanted to work for QCCA.
My recommendation would be to answer questions using the STAR technique (as outlined on the Careers website).

alyssa 6th Jul 2013 10:31

medical

Can you please advise what is involved with the medical. Also is a dental check carried out as well? My relative is asking the question. Also she has not heard back from QCCA or Qantas domestic as of yet and she applied online 2 weeks ago.

Many thanks :)

Qantas domestic rosters

Hi
Im currently working for EK and thinking of coming back to Australia. Can anyone tell me what a typical roster would look like for a brand new and very junior qantas domestic crew, based out of either Syd or Mel. What sort of trips would I do and where would I layover?
Many thanks in Advance

Flying Daruma 15th Jul 2013 01:12

Hi QFWonabe,

You would have a mixture of on-call days, daily returns and overnights. If you were to do on-call days, you could get anything (naturally). Daily returns can variate from a simple MEL-SYD-MEL to MEL-PER-MEL or something a bit longer like MEL-SYD-BNE-SYD-MEL. The layover destinations are generally the big cities such as MEL, SYD, PER, DRW, BNE, ADL and occasionally but rarely TSV or CNS.

I hope that helps :)

QFWonabe 15th Jul 2013 15:24

Thanks Flying Daruma ;)

Two more questions if its ok.

Is there any chance of getting an asian layover from Syd or Mel and
Are there any multi day trips i.e leave Syd or Mel and not return for 4 or more days.

Thanks in advance.

Flying Daruma 16th Jul 2013 09:29

Hi QFWonabe,

That's fine. I'm more than happy to answer any questions. We used to have layovers in the Asian destinations in Short haul (domestic) but not anymore, although that can change at any time.

There are 4 day trips or more, although you tend to get more of them out of SYD than MEL.

QFWonabe 17th Jul 2013 15:18

Thanks Flying Daruma

One more question

You said that there are "4 day trips or more" what is the pattern like and where is the layover.

Such a shame there are no more Asian layovers. It doesn't really seem worth while leaving Emirates, if I'm only going to be flying around Australia.

Thanks
