The Contract

Hey, I got offered the position of CSM about 3 weeks ago, I have sent back my medical questionnaire and had my innoculations updated.

But still no contract?

Any ideas on how long they take to get it sent out?

Smell The Coffee

Those of us who are not lucky enough to be CSMs are REALLY struggling at the moment ... as I've mentioned before, I barely took home £1000 after a FULL month's flying.
Really? Because I took home over £1000 last month and I had 3 weeks of unpaid work (including training and leave), so did only 1 week of flying. Does your paycheck include deductions for visa's, innoculations, some uniform items, HOST spending?

It's not as grim as some are making out on Mixed Fleet

You earned £1,000 for 1 week's flying ? And you're Cabin Crew on Mixed Fleet? I don't believe you for a second.

My figures are take-home and include £100 spending on HOST, which judging by other people's spending downroute, is average to good. They don't include any other deductions other than tax - I haven't spent a penny on uniforms, visas or inoculations as I was already in posession of all of the above.

At the end of the day, we all have our own opinions -mine is that Mixed Fleet pay for Cabin Crew as it currently stands, is too low. We don't make much money up in Duty Free commission because we don't sell much Duty Free on most of the routes we currently operate - and we don't sell anything else on board.

If I had a pound for every time the subject of low pay has come up between crew during the flight, I wouldn't be here warning people to stay away ...

People are applying for Cabin Manager at easyJet for goodness' sake ... now there is nothing wrong with easyJet, but I never imagined the day people would be leaving us for the likes of Virgin, Emirates or easyJet ... it was usually the other way round.

With the way things are at the moment, I can't blame them. Hopefully the pay may increase, but I doubt it.

That's my final word on the matter, as there isn't any need for me to keep repeating the same things - I am not a negative person at heart and I genuinely love flying - but anyone thinking they are going to get paid well for flying for BA - not anymore I'm afraid. You may want to ask yourself why Mixed Fleet has lost people to VS, EK and EZY....

Smell the coffee, I don't really know why you are complaining about the pay....

You applied for the job after presumably reading the advertisement which states the pay, went to the interview where again the pay is spoken of, read and signed a contract with the offer of pay enclosed. It's not like the amount you get paid has just been sprung on you after you joined. Or am I wrong?

I think you need to wake up... and smell the coffee!!

presumably you too read the advert for ba CSM where pay, terms and conditions were clearly stated.....however a few posts back you were asking for info. regarding average take home pay for that role.To me that would imply that you don't really know how much you are going to take home even though it was CLEARLY stated on the ad.
Smell the coffee is obviously very dissappointed with his take home pay......maybe he is not achieving what was promised, working on an allowance system where pay is determined by a bidding system that may not always work in your favour, can make take home pay vary by an amazing amount.
Hypocrite comes to mind

Bit off the current topic, more application process.

Do they ask for references at any point? I haven't needed to supply any during application so just wondered if it's another pointless company practice of assess, interview, like you then get references that say otherwise. Not saying that's the case with myself, but just curious, that's all!

kdhurst380, BA send an email with a link to add your reference information after your AD invitation. They have to be completed online before your AD.

We usually ask for references at the interview stage. We will also be looking for any gaps to be accounted for (usually for the last 5 years).

IF you are successful at our Assessment Day, references will then be contacted. No point doing it before this time as you might be unsuccessful and it would be a waste of time and resource.

Good luck.

BA mixed fleet....?

Hi everyone,

Im just new to this site and had a few questions to ask about working for BA mixed fleet as I have an interview coming up shortly and am hopeful il get it

Firstly Ive been on a few forums an they have been very rather negative about mixed fleet especially involving the salary. For those who work for mixed fleet is it really as dreadful as a lot of people seem to make out? whats is a realistic salary to expect at the end of each month.

I live in glasgow and I know there are plenty of crew members from here who have to commute down to gatwick of their own expense and i was wondering how often you have to travel down each month and the expenses? just want to be prepared as my career move involves lowering my salary.

Also for mixed fleet crew...whats the job like? do you enjoy it,? how long are you away for each trip?

I know these questions sound as if im a bit reluctant, its just that ive been reading so many bad things about mixed fleet its sort of dampened my spirits

looking forward to your replies and thanks in advance

Question HELP - should I or not ? MIXED FLEET BA

I have my AD end of FEB. I have read so many comments about the good and the bad.
I live in Sheffield will have to either drive or fly to LHR(from MAN) if I got the job.
Will it be worth my while ? I work part time at the moment and I bring home gbp800 pm. I have read that MF crew bring that home after tax but for working longer hours. Please give me an honest answer so I can make a decision to go for my assessment or cancel it. Thank you

I think the biggest problem you would find would be the commute. Say for example you have a longhaul trip landing at 6am. You will then have to fly then drive or just drive home afterwards. My other half used to have a 2 hour drive around the M25 when we used to live in Suffolk which she said was dire as the jet lag was so difficult to fight. The rest of that day she would need to sleep and then wake for some food before returning to bed for the evening.

Say you then get 1 day off, you could do what you like but then if you have a 9am report, you would probably have to be in bed pretty early so as not to have to fight the tiredness on the drive before your actual flight. Once you get to your hotel downroute, you would probably be so knackered that you go straight to bed resulting in a weird wake-up time the following morning. It would then go around in circles resulting in fatigue.

Since we have moved within 30 mins of the airport, my g/f has become a lot less tired and a lot happier. I think if you do take the job then it may be a good idea to rent somewhere near to LHR for say the first 6 months and see how you like the job. At least then you can make a fair and open decision on how you enjoy the work and lifestyle without the tiredness factor clouding any judgement you may make. Once you have done that and popped home a few times during that period, you'll be able to see how a commute would suit.

That's just how I would do things if it were me. Things in your personal life may of course mean this would be impossible but it may be worth trying if you have less ties

The average pay is currently slightly more than the figure you quoted in your post - add another £200-300, though this figure varies according to your roster and what you spend downroute.

You need to work out how much money you are likely to spend in an average month commuting to and from LHR.

You will be able to bid for the type of work you want (trips or home every night) but you must bear in mind it is a PREFERENCE system ... if you bid properly, and with some luck, you should get most of what you bid for.

Be realistic and prepared to do some of the unpopular work (very early starts, LHR-PRG-LHR, LHR-BUD-LHR) and at least one block of standby per month (typically 4 days which may include at least 1 or 2 Airport Standbys).

Currently FTCs tend to get more longhaul work due to the requirement of at least 1 FTC on every longhaul flight (not required on shorthaul).

Good luck, hope this helps.

from experience of a recent trip from East Midlands to around LHR i would say to commute is almost impossible. The M1 is now a traffic jam from anywhere around junction 11 all the way down to junction 6 for the M25 ALMOST ANY MORNING AFTER 5A.M. so the chances of you getting to LHR at the time you are required to is pretty much nil.Same coming home (especially Friday night) it is not a nice piece of road to be on when youre knackered.Ihave just driven over the MI bridge at junction 24 and it is pretty much static so for youre own health and sanity i dont think commuting would work to well.

How about going for the assessment day and see if you get offered the job? In the meantime make a list of all the questions that you have and ask the team at the Rivers. If you want to see the world, or some of it, it is a great way of doing that. If you want to earn a good living then it won't meet that criteria. Good luck whatever you choose!

The price of a standby/staff ticket for a domestic flight is around £72. return...not cheap!!! Makes commuting by air very expensive. When i joined ba about 12 years ago it was only £35!!
outrageous!
