They are talking for the "new" contract: Virgin rate plus 10%.

Hourly payment of allowances. If anything like LGW £2.30.

It will be mixed flying fleet.

If it helps... forget anything you know about BA cabin crew salaries and working agreements. It won`t be anything like what you know or have heard.
This is possibly what you are in the holding pool for..
Ask lots of questions before jumping in with both feet

TALKS UPDATE 19TH MARCH
Mar 19th, 2009 by admin

Negotiations on cost-cutting have today resumed.
For the last week it has probably appeared to have all gone away, or at least we could have hoped it had......It categorically has not.

A joint meeting of all the Unions from across the airline that are involved in cost cutting measures was held on Tuesday and information on each of their targeted savings was shared. Last week British Airways had declined to share this information with us. It is apparent that cost saving targets are not equal but vary widely across the airline. For example, the Pilots' budget is £445 million and they face no cuts. Their only input is to not incur further costs over the next two years. Their projected increase is £13 million and this will be their contribution. The vast majority of other areas will achieve savings by quite a severe headcount reduction but not by changes to terms and conditions ("restrictive practices"; as Willie Walsh prefers to call them).

British Airways has now completed their expectations of the cost cuts for cabin crew. To remind you, the headline facts are again recapped below:
BA states that IFCE costs are £567.9 million per year. Most of that cost is salaries (98.9%).

BA wants to cut this by £82 million (14%) over the next two years, commencing April 1st 2009. This equates to approx £6,000 per person directly from earnings and/or costs. They propose this to be achieved by two separate but linked phases. The "new fleet" would still only save £35 million in its first two years, the remaining £47 million would need to come from existing agreements for current crew i.e. you.

Until now we have been unable to publish this "list" to you due to a confidentiality commitment specified to us when it was received. Our confidentiality commitment regarding this has ended and we have received legal clearance to reveal details to you. The following is a list of proposed and possible cost saving measures to reach the specified target, exactly as they were given to us.

What is acceptable or otherwise, is of course the subject of ongoing negotiation but from the list below you will be able to see these are substantial and major issues that will need to be faced. They affect all current crew, no matter which base or agreement you currently operate. It is not just a case of "Oh there's a new fleet coming but it won't affect me"; - it will.

Proposals for a New Fleet at LHR: Not for current crew unless joining the fleet

A low-cost fleet based on a low cost model (Almost identical to the document leaked by BASSA at Christmas).

BA aims to achieve this in the next 2 years. Approaching 1000 crew have already been trained and placed in a holding pool.

It will have over 2000 plus crew operating within two years

Market rate paid Cabin Crew in line with virgin plus 10%.

Fleet will consist of mixed flying on Airbus, 777, 747 aircraft.

Crew will consist of 3 new grades, Main Crew, Supervisor and Lead Supervisor. Not CSD, Purser and main crew and NOT to current levels.

No ETP, long-range, back-to-back or destination Payments or other variable shorthaul payments etc.

A fixed hourly rate.

Pay scales will have no time served increments, any increase in basic pay will be performance related.

Merit promotion.

No Seniority.

Crew will not operate to either Worldwide or Shorthaul agreements but to BA Scheme Limitations document only - For your information this is covered in your Blue Joint Operations procedures manual part 2, pages 78 to 107 inclusive. A link to show scheme details is also available via the BASSA website under agreements.
There will be no MBT etc just scheme days off.

Preference bidding to scheme.

BA project in year one 850 crew to be flying on this new fleet and 2075 by end of year two (remember EF has only 2314 crew and LGW single fleet, 1189.
Long-term this will lead to the total restructuring of cabin crew costs.

Proposed changes to existing crews terms and conditions ("restrictive practices") from this list:
1) Remove double night on LAX, SFO, PHX, MEX.
2) Reduce 777 crew compliment by 1 on long-range 4 class.
3) MBT to be a maximum of 4 local nights irrespective trip.
4) Reduce annual leave for all crew to 34 days from 36.
5) Completely flexible rosters, no fixed trips.
6) One main crew member removed from 777- 3 class.
* Details of item to be confirmed
7) Annual increment freeze for one year for all crew.
8 ) Remove one main crew from worldwide destinations that at present receive the extra crew member as agreed post September 11th 2001. For the summer they are CCU- DAC- DEN -CPT (042) MAA- MEX- MIA- MRU- PEK
9) Remove the early report day allowing report times prior to 0800.
10) Bidding only on EF, ending the 6-3 and 5-2 and job share work patterns.
11) Removal of 767 CSD on EF.
12) All Crew grades to be planned/rostered to work up or down with no extra payment or restriction.
13) Remove one main crew member from 777 long-range top up.
* Details of Item To be confirmed
14) Extension on Eurofleet working day from 12.30 hours to 15.00.
15) Allow earlier report/start and later debrief/finish times.
16) Replace all 24hr stand-by with 12 hour.
17) One purser to be removed from all 747 and 777.
18 ) Remove EF Club top-up crewing level agreement.
19) No meal allowances to be triggered whilst in flight.
20) Reduction of Box-One payments by 50%
21) Back-To-Back payments to be reduced by 50%.
22) All destination payments to be permanently removed. For summer these will be paid on MIA- LAD -DEN -DAR -SEA YVR- EBB- IAH- DFW -YYC
23) Pay actual ETP rather than planned.
24) Remove STR payments and introduce fixed links also with no payment - EF.
25) Replace QRS with airport standby.
26) Reduce report and debrief times i.e., shorten duty day timings.
27) Removal of telephone allowance.
28 ) Change definition of EF night duty.
29) Exchange 2 pursers from all 767, 747, 777 to junior crew positions (switching roles).
30) No CSD on 757 EF.
31) Switch one purser at LGW for main crew member.
These are potentially in addition to a two-year pay freeze.

Now we have been able to share this list, you will see first-hand the scale of the challenge we face, there are no easy options available. This will require ongoing and extensive consultation between us, as your representatives and you, as our members. This is something you need to become involved in, right now and take an active interest, it will affect every single one of us, it's not even a question of supporting your union, it's a question of being involved in some really hard and far reaching decisions that are not going to go away.

BASSA and Amicus sections of UNITE will continue to work closely together to do our best to protect your future, we will not kid you that this is going to be an easy task but please be assured that we will be doing our very best for you.We have now told BA that we will not meet next week as we wanted to start the consultation process with you over the next several days. Talks will however reconvene on the 30th and then obviously we have our branch meeting at Kempton Park on the 6th April when a full and frank debate will no doubt be forthcoming.

Exactly!!

Its not just the allowances either... Your be flying North South, East and West time zones long haul short haul, sounds fun huh? Wait till you do it.

Oh and add minimum rest in that equation...

It won`t be worth leaving other airlines for.

Just to correct a little inaccuracy wrt the pilots.

Their only input is to not incur further costs over the next two years. Their projected increase is £13 million and this will be their contribution.
The projected increase is indeed £13m in year one alone, but then an additional £13m on top of that again, in year 2. ie total savings £13m in year one, then £26m in year two, making a grand total of £39m over the two years, or three times what BASSA's spin suggests! There are 3200ish pilots, meaning this equates to just over £12k per pilot over the two years. (ie double BASSA's stated cabin crew member contribution).

I am not saying you guys are not being asked to give up a lot, I am simply pointing out that BASSA are trying to use the argument that the pilots aren't giving up anything so why should you, but it is an argument based upon false information.

To add another dimension. T5 ramp / Customer service staff stand at about 3300 , the projected figures by 2012 will be 2200 staff once a raft of new T and C's are in place, also making a significant cost saving.

BA wannabes.... you may not be on the current cabin crew pay scales or terms and conditions!
Ask lots of questions regards your contract when offered a course date.
(bet you don`t get many answers)

Hey Highlfyr

I would hazard a guess at around 10-11k basic, an hourly rate of around £1.50 an hour.

I am doing some figures now and its a bit tricky but bare with me.

8,760 hours in a year
384 hours of compulsory leave
2,592 hours of Scheme days off a year

Deduct the 384 and 2,592 hours from the 8,760 hours and you get 5,784 hours. This does not include time off for sick or personal issues like hospital appointments, deaths in the family, jury service say 3 days per year, thats another 72 hours off so that brings the total down to 5712. Multiply the 5712 by £1.50 (at best) and you get an allowance figure of £8,568 plus your £10,000 basic. There you have it, about £18,000 a year before tax. Youre looking at about £1100 a month after tax if you dont take more than 16 days leave and you only have 3 days off sick/personal a year.

A samle roster could be

DAY 1 0625 Double European there and back finish 1900
DAY 2 0800 Double Domestic there and back finish 2030
DAY 3 0600-1500 Airport Standby
DAY 4 Available
DAY 5 0700 triple sector, nightstop Europe
DAY 6 0530 triple sector finish 1800
DAY 7 OFF
DAY 8 0500 European there and back finish 1400
DAY 9 1600 Los Angeles arrive (0400 GMT) 2000 local
DAY 10 departure for London 1800 local (0200 GMT)
DAY11 Arrive London 1600
DAY 12 OFF
DAY 13 0500 Domestic there and back finish 1300
DAY 14 OFF
DAY 15 2030 Hong Kong
DAY 16 Arrive Hong Kong (1100 GMT) 1900 local
DAY 17 leave Hong Kong 2300 local (1500 GMT)
DAY 18 Arrive London 0500
DAY 19 OFF
DAY 20 1300 Airport Standby
DAY 21 Available
DAY 22 OFF
DAY 23 0600 European double finish 1800
DAY 24 OFF
DAY 25 0700 European triple sector, nightstop
DAY 26 0530 European triple finish 1600
DAY 27 OFF
DAY 28 OFF
DAY 29 0530-1500 Airport standby
DAY 30 OFF

this is more or less a mixed flying roster that works to Scheme. Unless you have worked as Crew before you may not know about Scheme. Scheme is an official document that lays down the law about Cabin Crew and the limits on the duty they can perform.

If you live close to the airport and you dont have a car or a mortgage or rent to pay, you should be fine. You can finish work, go home sleep for a few hours and come back into work. If you plan to work for BA for 2 or 3 years, you will have the time of your life on the plane. I wouldnt anticipate doing it for more than that as you will probably be exhausted!!! If you want to get married and start a family, just do it for 12 months that should be enough. Just so everyone knows, BA now expect their crew to stay for about 3 or 4 years before they go on and find a real job as there are now no pay increases planned for any crew starting from the holding pool. You can expect to be on the same salary for the 3 or 4 years that you stay with the airline.

I would reccomend you apply to all the airlines in the UK and the Middle East, see which one offers you the best deal and the best career prospects. BA is now a 3-4 year job at the most. I think you can really progress quite quickly at easyJet and MyTravel or any of the other charter airlines, they have really cushty trips like weeks here and there. The Middle Eastern airlines offer rent free/subsidised luxury apartments, free health and medical care, free tickets back to the UK and a whole load of other benefits. Its worth having a look at.

Anyway, good luck, keep your eyes peeled and your ears pinned back, you might be hearing a whole lot more about being BA cabin crew over the next few months, Ive got a sneaky feeling about that

Well if there are other people like me seems like the new fleet is going to have enough cabin crews as I am ready to accept even this conditions in order to start flying with BA.

I would prefer to sell ice creams on the road than accepting conditions like these.

Goodness, you have spent time working everything out!!! How long did that take you??
No disrespect but the LGW are on a higher hourly rate than you suggested, about £2.32 isn't it? And apparently it has already been stated that the new fleet will be a higher hourly rate, at least 10% above?

The figures you quoted sound very much like another major carrier out of LHR, but they come out with alot less than that!!! Yes, it is a huge drop in comparison to current T+C's, but a salary of £18000 at start off, could be a hell of alot worse!!! Im sure lots of people will still be crying out for a chance to get on that 'new fleet' it comes about!! Just take a look at another post on this forum.........people are on the dole taking home £65 a week, and with lots of qualifications and qualities to offer!

wow! you have been busy working that all out...

And that sample roster looks hellish. Clearly others haven`t looked carefully at the destinations and factored in jet lag, and your day off (yes day off) will be you either spaced out or a sleep. Great life.. work work and work. You have to have balance in your life.

Oh there are other not so pleasant destinations in the BA network.

Anything to work (fly) for BA? On current terms and conditions yes, but that..

So lets have a break down..
£11000 pa works out at £916pm. Tax and NI very roughly £720pm.

Allowance £2.32 ph but LHR new fleet are getting an extra 10% ???? from previous postings. 23p an hour more. £2.55 ph. Tax that.

So are BA going to pay the hourly rate for standbys now?

No way!

Surely scheme or whatever it is called in BA is based around the CAA CAP371? That example roster doesn't include the requirement for 2 consecutive days off in 14 days, until day 27 in that example??

Lucylayover, further to your detailed post and roster.

From what I know of BA mixed fleet flying you have over estimated the short haul work on the roster, as I believe and BASSA have quoted the "NEW FLEET" will be flying the big box payment trips, this being one of their main concerns for current crew. So your roster model would not work due to CAA CAP 371 rules for time off on non aclimatised trips.

However if this type of work pattern and reduced rest is some way introduced by BA, and Im sure they will thank you for bring the idea to the table, then it will make commuting almost impossible. So may i suggest before you post this type of propagander you think of all our commuting collegues.

I was so shocked at that roster I was gob smacked plus a long day didn`t really study it too far.

Few fundemental mistakes. One being the 900 hours a year EU directive.

Thanks for the feedback and information guys. It was all really useful (and incredibly depressing!!!). I guess I'll wait for further instruction from BA and take the decision based on that. But, going on the information above, it's highly doubtful that I'll be able to join.

Thanks again. I'll just cross my fingers until I get 'the call'.

Btw hitting your 900 hours or becoming very close to it, you will be living on basic salary (ie £720 ish after sgl tax and NI pm) for a month or two.

Perhaps LGW crew or WW crew could explain this 900 hour EU directive better than myself.

Question When will BA next be accepting applications for cabin crew?

Not Lady P (her son) here,

I have been appyling for most airlines that are recruiting, I had an interview with BMI but wasnt successful. Someone said BA tend to recruit later on in the year and have cancelled the current training days.
It is my dream to go on board with BA and with so few other airlines recruiting its depressing.

I have also applied to Flybe, Qatar and KLM cityhopper and im only 19 so I cant apply to Emirates.

Anyone who knows the answers would be very much appreciated (sorry for being miserable).
