need your advice please:)

Hi everyone!
i'd love to get some advice from those of you who have got the job with emirates!
i'm japanese living in Japan.. do you think there would be more possibilities to be successful at the interview if i attend the interview in Japan because i am Japanese?? or attending an interview in some other countries would be better so that i can actually show i am comfortable being in an international environment and i can also stand out being one of the few japanese candidates at the interview???

i'd love to hear what you think..any opinion would be appreciated!
i'd really love to join this wonderful airline as soon as possible and work with you!!!!!

Lets try this piece of advice

Hey mahito,

I have been CC with EK for 17months now. The question whether to attend the interview in Japan or somewhere else and the pros and cons involving each different scenario is an interesting topic of discussion.

However I'd advise you to shift your focus from where to what will get you the job anywhere, and regarding this I will admit that I do not know the particularities of the interviewing process in Japan (assuming there must be some); to my opinion this is:

-POSITIVE FRIENLDY & OPEN ATTITUDE
People get nervous at interviews (I do). Recruiters are people and know that, nonetheless they expect a certain level of confidence. They would usually allege that if you cant calm yourself for an interview you will not be useful at calming upset pax, managing difficult situations or medical cases, or performing your work with +100 faces staring at you.
So be calm, allow yourself perhaps a bit of nervousness, but be confident.

Once you feel confident dont push it too hard. Keep a low profile but participate. Dont be too eager to shine above the rest but be prompt to stand up, say "good morning everyone, my name is...I am...years old...I come from...and I look forward to fly with Emirates"

-SMILE, GROOMING
Impeccable groomig is a must. I am a boy so there is not much fuzz more than shaving and general stuff but for girls it is. They might look at:

-Make up. EK crew use red lipstick so start from there. Or maybe just take it with you in case you want to apply it later. Use conservative amounts
-Clothes. Use a business attire, like white shirt, black jacket and skirt (no short skirt). Shoes accordingly.
-Hair. Dont have hair hanging, use a pony tail or any similar technique you girls use to tighten up your hair.
-Nails. You probably know better than me.
-Accesories. Have a small watch, silver or golden, like an elegant watch not a sports one. Wear earrings. If you use a necklace keep the same considerations. Girls usually use pearls with their uniform.

-CLEAR COMMUNICATION
Most people have english as foreign language. Regardless of your mastery of the mother tongue of Shakespeare make sure people understand what you are saying and you understand what people say.

In aviation communication is a big issue, it trascends social interaction and goes directly into safety. It is questionable how much of this comes in the interview but keep it in mind. You might find yourself going to a captain and telling him "John, when we took off i heard a strange noise at the back of the aircraft and passengers heard it too..." etc.

What i mean with this: if the recruiters assign you a task and you did not fully understand what they said ask them to kindly clarify.

-TEAMWORK
This is a big thing in this job, and your ability to work around others will be evaluated.

In the interview you will probably be subject to group interaction. I remember sitting in a circle and telling the person on my left things about me and hearing the person on my right tell me things about herself, in order to have everyone introduce the person next to them.

I think I was fortunate enough for one girl next to me to misunderstand the assignment. I politely explained her of her mistake and asked her to reconsider, to look around and see how the group was interacting and told her that we would both look bad if we would not come right with this. Although I was discreet I think the recruiters saw that and it was eventually beneficial for me.

***

I will not extend much more for the moment. I know of people not being successful in their countries and going elsewhere and passing there. If you are from Japan you could try Australia or Singapore.
Also the open day in Japan could be months away and you could just want to apply straight away and so go elsewhere. If you can afford to it could be a good idea. If you have friends somewhere you could visit them and go for the interview.

I think it will not pass unnoticed for you to be the only Japanese. And I think it could prove to be a highlight for you on the day of the interview.
Does that mean you have to fly out of Japan to get this job? I dont think it is necessary to go out of your home country to be successful.

Emirates is an international airline. Wherever they go -it is of my impression that- they will be looking for the same qualities.

I hope this to be useful for anyone reading.

Good luck and success to you.

p.s. check the facebook website for EK crew, you might run into some japanese that could have insights on the OD in Japan.

Age for cabin crew

Hey Sena,

you are more than ok to join with 30. A lot of people have seen a lot of people joining with +30. A batchmate of mine was 34.

Keep it up. If mahito is right you could try to attend an interview somewhere outside of your country. Although I am still convinced it is not necessary.

Keep it up, you were almost there. Twice. The third one is the one. Success!

Hi G...
wow! thank you so much for the great advice!!! from your reply i can tell why you could get into Emirates..you are such a helpful person and with those clear ideas!
actually i've been to an interview already twice and couldnt make it through the discussion part... i can probablly guess why i couldnt make it through..because on my first try i remember i wasnt concentrating on the group discussion. obviously the interviewers noticed that.. and on my second try other candidates in my group were quick to speak up and i ended up saying nothing even a single word.. i knew i should say something, but at the same time i thought it would look bad if i cut in on the conversation... in my group everyone was very talkative so i thought i'd be a listener..maybe that was a wrong choice and i should have said something too.. or might be other reason why i couldnt make it through the discussion part.. discussion is so hard.. we got only 5 minutes and in this short time and while everyone was quick to speak i have to say my opinion too..
i learned something from each interview so i will try to do better next time!! i will try again next time for sure, i'd really love to join Emirates!

well i think the interview process is the same in Japan and other countries. we have to go through arm reach check, group interviews, and i heard after the discussion there'll be English test and essay test..and then final interview.
G... if you dont mind me asking, did you go to an interview in your home country?? do you know more successful people that attended the interview in other countries than those who went to the interview in their home country???

thanx again so much for your reply!
im sure you are busy with your flight but have a nice weekend

Why coudn't i make it

G, thanx so much for your advice. I'll surelly try it for the 3rd time but idon't know if i should ask you this. for twise i made it to the final stage. What do i do this time? The questions they asked me was a normal questions on my current job, ie i should point out one mistake that a coleague did and how i corrected him or her.
I quickly thought of something and they asked me if my coleaque was happy about the way i said it and i said yes. And they asked me if i have any question to ask them and i said no thank you. They told me i'll hear from them from six wks and that i should go and bring my pictures and i did.
My second final interview was also similar question that has to do with a difficult customer that i had deal with. This time i was brief as i presumed i spoke too much in the first interview. But after these final interview they asked me to take another test that has to do with drawings and the finished time was taken.
The next three days i had a mail and it was the same attitude test we did during the interview. I did and sent it to them. Two weeks later they sent me the same test I did and sent it and a week later i had the regret letter.
Am kind of confuse here because i don't really know where am getting it wrong. Is it at the final interview stage or is it the test or is it the pictures? I really want to know so i don't repeat my mistakes this time that is if they invite me for an interview again.

Mishishishi,
Just relax and be yourself. Don't speak too loud. Never go against anybody. During group discussion, it's important to respect other's opition and not to be agressive. And I think dress code is very important too. Don't wear anything too tight. Look conservative. Good luck!

I finally pushed my DOJ all the way to June 27. Anybody joining at the same time?

By the way, does anyone know how many people make it through from the final interview? We were 12 at the final, and I really want to get in touch with them. I wonder how many of them I would see in Dubai.

Regarding the advice

Hey mahito,

I went for the interview in my home country.

I know of just a few people that applied in my country or in nearby countries instead of their original country. Maybe like a 10-20% of the successful applicants. So it is only a small percentage.

Nonetheless I would like to say that being selected in some countries can be much more difficult than in others. India and South Korea are places where it is of my impression that it is tougher to be recruited than others due to the mount of people applying for the job. I dont know Japan. In my country, which is Argentina, there might have been only 100-200 applicants, whereas in India you might get ten times that number.

But again, the recruiters will tell you that they dont have a maximum number of people to recruit. At least this was so in my place. They said there was space for as many people as they would choose.

To be honest, I wonder if I would go for the interview today, if they would hire me again or not.

I can only encourage everyone applying for the job to keep it up and wish them best success.

Why you could not make it...

Sena,

it might have been a mix of luck and merit for me to get through this the first time. Hence my experience is rather limited and I honestly dont know the exact details or criteria to hire or not hire an applicant at a final stage.

They did ask those questions you mention in the final interview and I have a ton of stories to share since I was ground staff for LH and UA, so I talked quite a lot, although always keeping an eye on the point of what i was talking about.

-There might be a bit of a scheme for those questions tough, keep this in mind:

What was the problem?
What did you do?
What was the outcome?

When you talk about previous experiences keep that format in your mind and try to summarize the story in that order and around those items.

If they did not hire you at the last stage you can ask for feedback. It might be seen as very positive for you to ask them if there is something that they see you could work on to develop and improve.

And quoting mishishishi: "just relax and be yourself", I know A LOT of people that did not particularly want the job and just applied to see what happened. I tell this because when you dont have much to lose in your mind, when you dont die to get the job, your whole self and body transmits a different vibe. I know it is easy to say and difficult to do: just relax, dont try too hard.

Hope this is useful

Hey congrats to you man! See u in Dubai soon!

Anybody here still waiting for their golden call?? Exactly 3 weeks now since my final interview and still no advise. I wonder if regret letters have already been sent out to the unsuccessfuls... it would surely be a huge relief for me!

BTW, just want to share you this insider info: Emirates received 70,000 applications for cabin crew in the month of December 2007. Out of that number, only 3,000 got the job --> that's about 5% of the total number of applications received. If you are one of those guys who had the FI in December and got a golden call, you are VERY VERY VERY lucky!

Hey guys,

I can see I'm not the only one frustrated by the waiting. My DOJ is 23.05. and I'm still waiting for the final approval. I already resigned from my current job (Gulf Air)because I would like to spend some time at home before I join. The good thing is that I can cancel my resignation and stay in with GA if EK say no. I was just wondering in which cases EK do not approve? I'm getting a bit nervous....and some of my medicals sent by e-mail also went mysteriously missing before. Oh well.

Amid

Hi Amid,
Yes that's is just an email advising you to resign and tender the resignation letter back to ccjoiners. Please refer to your original contract and there's a page with resignation letter format you should pass to your HR and let them print it out with company letterhead, sign it and scan/email to ccjoiners.

By the way, when is your DOJ? Mine is May 30.
