Obtaining updates on forced landing
 

Good morning. On 15 Sept I was airborne near Royston and witnessed a SEP conduct a forced landing in a ploughed field. Both myself and the accident pilot were speaking to Fboro North. Who should I contact to enquire about the outcome and whether there were any injuries? Is it appropriate to call Farnborough or should I wait for an AAIB report?

It should have been reported to the watch manager at Swanwick ATCC and Farnborough should have raised an occurence report for the CAA.

Since it doesn't feature on this database the outcome was probably good. I also can't find any reference to a light aircraft forced landing in the mainstream media for that area. Are you sure you have the right date?

Good afternoon both. I emailed Farnbough airport enquiries, who passed on some information from NATS and informed me that there were no injuries. Happy to hear about this positive outcome.

Why Farnborough Airport? They have nothing to do with the LARS operation which is run by NATS Farnborough.

Seems to have achieved the required result though, so I’m not sure why you think an intimate understanding of the various bureaucracies of Farnborough is relevant?

Because I suspected that those at Farnborough airport might know more than me about where to route my query, and I didn't want to clog up the LARS phone number with a non-urgent query. Do let me know if you have a better approach (although I hope I don't have to make another such query in the future).

I (along with other NATS controllers) operated Farnborough LARS for 34 years.

I would be very interested to have your advice on who I ought to have contacted.

Unless things have changed a lot since I retired, the procedure for an aircraft accident within the London FIR was to contact the Watch Manager at London ATCC, Swanwick. The controller at Farnborough ATC would send a report to the CAA via their Manager ATS but as it happened nowhere near the airfield itself, the airport authority would not be informed in fact their only interest in movements off the airfield is when there is a noise complaint.

Naturally the aerodrome authority would pass any query on to ATC.
