NBAA Troubled by Delays in Background Checks for US simulator training

From the editors of Aviation International News:

In a letter sent in late April to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, NBAA (National Business Aircraft Association) expressed “deep concern” regarding the process by which foreign nationals obtain permission for flight training in the U.S. While the association said it supports the concept of background checks for foreigners seeking flight training in the U.S., “the procedure developed by the Department of Justice encourages pilots to seek training in other countries.” NBAA urged Ashcroft to work with the flight-training industry to address “the critical technical background check requirements and ensure maximum security for the U.S. while allowing U.S. allies worldwide to benefit by receiving flight training from American companies.”

Checks

Yip... It is very inconvenient process and can take up to 3 weeks. So no more schedule check on Friday and PC on Monday type deals. I am looking for other alternatives and have found some that might work out.

Worst part of the whole process is that you have to do it all over again every time you want to come for training. Must cost flight schools millions in lost revenues...

Cheers

JJ

Ciao JJ,

I was just at SimuFlite in Dallas two weeks ago (Lear 35 recurrent) and there were very few foreign customers there.

Hopefully this will change soon.

Cheers,

FlightSafety announced last week that they're setting up a major full-service European Learning Centre at Farnborough with eight sims, high-tech classrooms, interactive training aids — due to be operational next year. They've not yet revealed what types they'll be offering training on.

Pan Am in MIA secured DOJ clearance for one of our guys in less than four days. We called on the Tuesday; the course was confirmed Wednesday and the DOJ clearance came through on the Saturday. He started Monday. Now that ain't bad.

Would love to take my business else where, but unfortunately for some aircraft types the only simulators in the world are in the US.

Dubai CAE

The CAE facility in Dubai is up and running, Boeing, at preset, but the Gulfstream 4 will be operational in August.

There are more and more facilities opening this side of the pond.

Once more the Americans are shooting themselves in the foot.

The door to the boeing sim is in full compliance with anti terorists attacks.

To keep the record straight, it is not "the Americans," it is the American government.

Hi guys,

Tried to get to Whichita on the 10th of March. All was in place, background check ok! Unable to obtain an M1 visa for non-vocational training as Flight Safety is not approved as a training organisation by the INS, hence FS could not issue me with the form that I required to send in with my visa application.
NIGHTMARE! 3 Weeks of groundschool and Simms, not an aircraft in sight!

I hope they sort themselfs out, for their own sake for one, they are loosing out on some serious money.

Cheers,
LittleTony.

Obtained DOJ approval through Bombardier, Dallas in 5 days and completed my recurrent a few weeks back. There was one guy who had not obtained his clearance and he would have got thrown out of class if it wasn't for the fact that he got his clearance right before we actually started the training (you know...after the morning bs...;) ).

My understanding is also that you will not be approved to come for training unless you're already type rated in something above 12,500 lbs. How would that work if you're going for your first type rating??? Catch 22???? This may have changed though so I might be wrong.

Best of luck to all of you in getting in ;)!

Will :)
