Jet for 1,000m runway
Hi,
I'm looking forward to operate a jet from a 1,000m runway (VFR daytime only). My longest flight would be a 1,200NM trip (2/3 pax). I have been looking at CJ1+ and Premier. Budget is around 2.5M. Either of these need longer runways. What would be your suggestion? I would be hiring a pro pilot as well. PM me if you are interested. Thank you. |
That's right at the lower limit for most of the light jets. Cessna Mustang or M2, maybe the Phenom 100? It's what the new Pilatus PC-24 was designed for, but you won't find one in your budget.

I once spec’d a jet that I might have operated of a 1000’ runway but it would not achieve 1200nm range with that runway. I am not in the game anymore so I can offer sound unbiased advice, if you would like it PM me. To operate off that runway in a jet you will need to have a sound knowledge of performance issues and fly accurately, it is possible but the pilot needs to know what he is doing to be safe. MM |
Personally i'd avoid the Premier 1 - from memory it was terrible for short runways, at least when operating public transport (which I appreciate you may not be).

So, I know you spec'd jets right at the beginning, but, if 1200nm is your longest trip, what is your average, "usual" normal trip? Your 1000m runway limit points directly at turboprop, King Air, PC-12, or such.

"1,000m runway" - what about obstacles ? What about elevation ? What about average temperatures ?
We operate a Citation Sovereign out of 1066m of runway WITH close in obstacles. THEY limit us to about 1500-1600nm of range. Without the obstacles we could go about 300 to 500nm further. (depending on temperature, load, wind). The Sovereign would be above the budget though. IF you are serios about spending that amount of money, then let a professional make an analysis of the airport you mention. APG or similar companies can provide professional help in runway analysis for about every type on the planet. "I would be hiring a pro pilot as well." What about 2 ? That second dude if properly qualified and trained is worth a lot. |
Cirrus Vision G2 can take off less than 1000m and has range 1275nm. Also within your budget even brand new.

With those requirements I wonder if you would not get better served by a high end turboprop vs low end jet 🤔

Landing performance of almost all light jets on a wet runway negates contemplating use of 1000m the vast majority of the time. Often the smaller ones have very poor landing performance but adequate take-off capability. Absolutely forget the likes of the Premier 1, Beechjet, Hondajet, Phenom 100 etc. Even the 'baby' jets like the Eclipse and Vision SF50 have the Achilles heel of inadequate stopping performance on a wet runway. Often some of the larger types have better field performance actually. The Phenom 300 is notably better than the 100 for instance. Stick with the very smallest straight-wing Citations in this context, albeit some can't make the 1,200nm range requirement. Often the older ones are actually better than the new versions.
I'd forget a jet and go for a King Air or PC-XII. For the King Air, go for some of the aftermarket mods available - Raisbeck etc. |
