Liability insurance when contracting
Does anyone based in Europe have personal liability insurance when operating as contract flight crew? I'm stepping into the contracting and trying to get all of my ducks in a row. Aircraft is AOC, so this is purely a query about individual liability insurance - I want to make sure I'm not going to lose the roof over my kids heads should I shuffle off this mortal coil in an incident and become and easy target for blame...
Maybe this is a bit pessimistic, but I'm treating this like a prenup' - no matter how rosy it all is, have a plan for the worst. Any personal experiences very much welcomed either public or private messages. https://www.pprune.org/rotorheads/44...insurance.html |
I looked into this a few years ago and couldn't find a UK insurer that would touch anything 'airside' - I ended up with basic cover landslide only. Conclusion was that once operating the aircraft you were covered by the owners insurance....

Like you, I've not found anything feasible in the way of personal liability insurance and less comfortable now about operating as a non-limited entity. For simplicity sake I was hoping to avoid forming a limited company, however it would at least offer an additional layer of protection. |
Public liability insurance is often an important cover for contractors, in case someone is injured or their property damaged because of your business. Simply Business offers between £1 million and £5 million in cover, to protect you against this cost.

I too tried for a long time to get cover but in the end gave up. I did limit the risk slightly by operating as a limited company and getting my main client to name me on their policy. simple fact is that any pilot ... employed or self employed who is deemed grossly negligent could always be sued personally ... even by his employers or, more likely, their underwriters...... If you have significant assets...you could always transfer them to your wife and thus shield yourself.... but you’d need to be sure of the strength of your marriage!! |
