General aviation in the UK

Can anyone explain why the majority of the general aviation is in the south of England? From a maintenance point of view there's very few companies in the north that carry out maintenance on light aircraft they all seem to be in the south. Just wondering as to why this could be.

More money in the south, more airports, better weather.
Thats my first set of guesses.

Leeds East Airport

Ex-RAF Church Fenton - Development underway but not for housing!
Substantial investment into infrastructure (Terminal, exec FBO etc) with airfield licence planned for end of Sep 15. Honda Jet due 2/4 2016. GNSS approaches planned for Mar 16.
One Pheonix from the ashes that should encourage GA in 'the North'

I think it's a lot to do with population density. Far more people squeezed into the south, and especially the south east. GA is far more accessible to people on lower incomes in other areas, especially the north of England as living costs are lower.
