Crash in Finland 20 april
Rumors that a Comp Air 8 with 11 persons on board crashed. 8 dead.
|
Unfortunately 8 fatalities confirmed by the police. 3 survivors.
Reports are that part of the left wing separated at approx 4 kilometres altitude. |
|
there is a rumour flying around that there was a baby onboard.
Very strange if it was para dropping. |
Reports are that part of the left wing separated at approx 4 kilometres altitude. Having done many para drops I wonder if the guys were hanging off the wing. Furthermore I see it 'reported' that the pilot survived by jumping out. I have never worn a parachute in my life. As the captain I would go down with the ship doing my best for all on board. there is a rumour flying around that there was a baby onboard. |
Exascot different countrys.
I have sat many a time watching that aircraft go up with a beer sitting on the sun balcony. And then the meat bombs land next to the short runway. They do lots of tandem drops. Its a really nice field and a centre for the local community it will hit them very hard and my thoughts are with them. I might add I didn't see anything dodgy about the aircraft operation when I was there. In fact the whole thing seemed quite sensible with the LZ well away from the active runway with a short walk to the packing shed, then a short walk down to the apron on the other runway. I did see the plane close up and externally she looked as if she got alot of TLC. Was even thinking about going for a jump with them. O well its a wait for the report time again to see what failed. |
Exascot,
If the wing falls off then be my guest and stay aboard. Be a hero. Bail out rigs are there to be used in these situations. 13k is also not an unusual drop altitude. Mo |
Guys, just my input. It didn't say the whole wing fell off. Point taken about different country.
|
From locals the whole wing didn't come off. Just a bit of it, I suspect the bit outside of the wing support.
I suspect if it did nobody would have got out. |
Couple of facts:
-no baby -8 fatalities, 2 female and 6 male -3 survivors, of which one is pilot. All used parachutes. -comp air 8, oh-xdz -local tv(mtv3) has obtained footage of the a/c falling down. In this footage it's clearly visible that part or all of one wing is missing. -jumping from 4km is normal. source is local news and flightforum. |
thanks for that. Do you have a link to the video?
Found it :( http://www.mtv.fi/uutiset/kotimaa/ar...oimia-/3174490 |

Not my find, was on another PPRuNe thread which I am unable to locate quickly enough. Edit: beaten to it by someone who probably can understand the text in his/her link, too ;-) |
There's smoke coming from the plane?
Hard to see 100% if part of the wing is missing. What's the maximum of the wing that could be gone before the plane becomes uncontrollable? |
-piece of wing was found 500m away from the main wreckage.
- All fatalities were found inside the wreckage, which was totally burned. Speculation: "smoke" in the video is most probably kerosene leaking. |
it does look like the whole supporting spar has come away.
If that goes there is no chance the wing root is strong enough to keep the wing on even with normal 1 g loading. |
Surprised to hear that the aircraft is a Comp Air 8 - I was under the impression that model is a "kit plane" without full type certification?
|
It is but you can use it for none public transport uses.
Similar to gliding tugs. Again with this sort of stuff its very country dependent what they have allowed in the past and it may very well be different to what's allowed or used in our own country. There is still the ability to grandfather dispensations in EASA as we have done in the UK. |
Aircraft was club owned, non-commercial and experimental.
More information from the head of the crash investigation board: -wing might have broken but stayed attached to frame -just reaching exit altitude, pilot experienced longitudinal control problems and a/c went into dive -emergency exit was decided - All survivors exited through pilots door -last survivors spare parachute deployed immediately after exit -main jump door was never opened |
what alt are the emergency chutes baro triggers at to cause them to release?
|
If memory serves me, the Cypress unit fires at 750 feet. This is typically 3 seconds before impact in a belly down position at terminal velocity. Things will get messy if the thing fires whilst in the aircraft. Hense why we descend carefully with jumpers aboard.
|
Maybe not smoke coming from the falling plane but fuel escaping from the ruptured wing
