Converting licence to FAA
Hi Guys,
I am looking to hold duel FAA and JAA licences. I currently have a JAA and performed the written portion of the FAA recently. My question is whats the best way to get the FAA and have your type rating on it? Any tips? Thanks Uberwang. |
If you have done the FAA ATPL written you can pass the test on your next recurrent check ride.

easiest way is during a new rating with an US TRTO start the process at least 2 month before the TR: search the faa.gov site for a special form: application for an US FAA ATP on basis of your FAA ATP (attention: NOT VALIDATION) send this request form to the FSDO near to the TRTO incl cert. true copy of ATP and logbook pass the FAA theory test either part 121 or 135 pass FAA medical ask TRTO to perform two checkrides, 1 FAA and 1 JAA (afaik combined FAA/JAA checkrides are no longer approved by FAA) apply for FAA radiolicence online (and pay...) receive your FAA licence rgds welle edit: the above way applies, if you do not previosly hold a FAA licence (CPL, PPL etc..) edit II: correct typos... or search pprune - this question turns up here quite frequently |
You can do the checkride out of the US as long as the centre is approved and you have the FAA Examiner. You need to make sure you have still done the TSA approval though and have a current Class 1 medical.

The problem I am having is the cost. I am currently not in line for another rating and would have to fund it all myself. What about a check ride on say a 172 and then having my jet rating converted? Too simple? Thanks Uberwang |

Not sure about a 172. You probably have to open it with a multi engine land for it to be of any use. Plus, as I have found, single engine ATP examiners are hard to find.
It really was a simple process. Get your TRTO/FTO on board early on and they will help. I'm not sure if you need a letter of verification of your licence from your own CAA. I got it to be safe, but looking back it may only have been for an FAA licence on the basis of my JAA one. Needless to say don't go down this road or you'll forever be going round in circles checking validities. A final note. When you go for your Cx ride have all your logbook totals to hand. Including cross country, instrument time, night etc etc. you'll find a list in the far aim I'm sure. They ask for some totals that we generally don't pay attention too. |
