Aerial Work PIC change
Just wanted to see if there is any advice on the following scenario.
Aircraft Hire by Company. Commercial Pilot Hire by Company Engaged to fly to do commercial aerial survey/photography. During the flight the photographer A PPL holder takes control and flys between aerial locations. Although the PIC is the CPL holder can the PPl holder Log the time at the controls. Alternative. Aircraft Hire by company Commercial Pilot hired by Co PPL holder flies most of the time but CPL takes control for aerial photography. Can the purpose of a flight be changed mid flight? Thanks for any input. |
Yes it can. Just make sure you don't double book the time and make sure the hand over of command is clearly agreed and the times noted.
Although the PIC is the CPL holder can the PPl holder Log the time at the controls. We do this at work when on long transit flights. SPA with 2 crew so split the command time. |
But wouldn't the PPL have to pay for their share of the operating costs for the time that they were logging PIC?
If they don't it would be illegal. |
Wold you construe it as the PPL holding being paid to fly or getting valuable consideration? If not then I would not see an issue. But I will watch the debate with interest?

There is a AIC on it, the CAA have said that if you are logging it without paying a share its considered a benefit in kind. Only time they can do it is if they are complying with the charity flight AIC and glider tugging and the like.
Of course its a consideration when I didn't know any better it saved me £2500 in hour building, moving folks aircraft to and from maint for them. |
Do you happen to know the AIC numbers?
So if an aircraft is operated by a company and a PPL is asked if they wish to ferry an aircraft back is that deemed aerial work (in which the pilot must be a CPL) So to you previous post are you saying that the PPL would have to contribute to a share of the flight in line with the time logged. Although the original purpose of the flight is commercial aerial work it can be changed mid flight (for pleasure)!!! |

Thank you.
Many aspects are very clear. Some of not so!! (without a copy of the ANO ):(:) |
The way I have interpreted it is..... And I am more than happy to be wrong.
CPL/ATPL can pretty much do what they like within there ratings and be payed or not payed but they don't have to shell out any money for what ever they do. PPL- They can't get free hours or any form benefit from the flight unless they chip in to the direct running costs or they are part of the excemptions. Personally I disagree with the current state of affairs. There should be someway that a PPL can ferry a mates aircraft from A to B as a favour without a CPL. It shouldn't be the case though that a PPL can ferry an aircraft to help out a commercial company eg flying school, or say position in a photo ops aircraft for a job. |
