Up in the Air - hot air balloon festival in Uis, Namibia in February 2012
The residents of Uis look expectantly to February 2012: Then, the small town will host the first hot air balloon festival held in Namibia. Nearly 20 hot air balloon pilots have already confirmed their attendance to date. "We expect even more participants," said organizer Ralf Matthaei in the AZ interview. The guests will come from Germany, France, South Africa and Namibia. "We expect over a 1000 visitors," he said.

The festival takes place on 9 to 13 February. The first day will start with a "trial run", to get the foreign pilots used to wind and weather, said Matthaei. The second day will begin with a fox hunt. One hot air balloon will set off with about 30 minutes of head start, said the organizer. Then the remaining participants, who must try to catch the first hot air balloon, will follow.
On the same evening Matthaei also promises a unique visual spectacle: In a "Night Glow", all balloons will hold around Uis, then light up in different colors.

The next day, according to Matthaei, several parashutists will jump from the balloons, all attempting to land on a marked spot in Uis. The whole thing will be wrapped up with a photoshooting and prize giving.
