Transiting from PC12 to a faster plane
 

Hi

I am flying PC12 for more than one year, and now I am thinking of upgrading to some faster plane. I pilot PC12 myself nd since I love PC12 ability to land on 800m long grass airport, I have discovered, that I fly from ILS to ILS. I also fly on longer legs, and being inside cocpit for 3 hrs alone, motivates me to find faster alternative.

And since, there were several engine outs in PC12, Meridians and Caravans, I do not belive, that "turbines never fail." Yeas they fail, and if I fly with PC12 over big areas of sea, or sometimes in night, or in heavy IMC conditions, I am really scared.

As my favorite plane I would opt fo CJ3.

Are there any suggestions, which plane should replace my PC12?

If you can handle a PC12 then a CJ3 won't be a problem.

However if it just for you, try a CJ2 or a 1+. The CJ2+ is an absolute dream to fly. But why fly so much extra mass?

CJ1s are reasonably priced at the moment, but prices will rise again.

Transition to CJ models nice and easy.... and you won't miss that single prop at all! Good time to buy too.. plenty of low-time 2002 onwards models on the market from about $2.4 mill.. and better than a Mustang on every level IMHO. Good Luck! BM

IMHO, Spunky Monkey has it right, the CJ2+ would be ideal. It has more power than the 1, especially when using bleed air for anti-ice and SE. The difference between the 2+ and the 3 is not as big as between the 1 and the 2+.
The FADEC in a 1+,2+ or 3 is worth gold especially for the not so experienced.
The avionic in the 1+.2+ and 3 is very, very good especially with the JeppView maps build in.

Since you don´t write about your aviation background I assume that you´re not professionally flying. Do yourself a favour and get a proper typerating at FlightSafety, get a 2 year fullservice contract which entitles you for free training and do 2 refreshers a year.
Also, if you would fly the first jet, get yourself a good, experienced instructor for the first 14 days. Amazing how steep the learning curve can be if you do that. (I had a factory paid pilot with me the first 2 weeks on the Challenger 300, I already had some 7000 hours then and still liked the iput given very much) In todays market you might be able to negotiate something like that for free...

About turbines that never fail...a relative of mine was a commercial pilot from 1960 to 2004, flying anything between Piper Apaches and Twin Otters. In 18000hrs there was only one engine failure: a PT6 that had fuel pump shaft failure (Piper Cheyenne).

The PC12 is a fantastic aeroplane, but I share your worries in bad wx, night etc.

Why not a Citation Mustang? Easier to fly single-pilot than CJ2+.

.. thorough training and a top-drawer instructor for your first trips are invaluable... and may reduce your insurance premium. On a seperate point, whilst acknowledging that the Mustang can be a near fool-proof first jet (especially for single-pilot ops) I'd go for a CJ anytime (lower outlay, proper potty, range etc). Interesting to note that many Mustang buyers quickly trade-up to a CJ. Good luck anyway. BM
