Interested in hearing any feedback from Commercial and Ops guys on the various bits of software for quoting and setting up flights - I'm less interested in the compliance sections of these software, more about how they price, contract and set-up jobs.

Hi Phil
Have a great bit of software for quoting, a piece of string pinned to a map on the wall. Not gone wrong in 34 years, (a bit like my planes), although I do remember it breaking some time in the early 80's. Suspect you have a very similar piece of string.
Seriously tho' a well calibrated piece of string can be just as accurate as fancy computer programmes and very much quicker. You can calibrate in time, distance or even £ , very flexible.

Wise words Hawker, but in the current compliance environment it's becoming unworkable.

We've had problems with the risk assesment on our string - our new SMS has highlighted some tripping and garroting hazards that require constant callibration and burning the end with a match to stop it fraying, don't get me started on the hazard / risk / prevention process of matches!

We've been working on some virtual string on a digitised map, but this has caused problems with the CP who insists on having his PC screen in 640 x 480 resolution and is now convinced that it's 640 nM from Istanbul to Coventry.

The way to tackle the CAA/EASA compliance issue with POS software (Version 32.1b) is to invoke (great?) grand father rights with your ops inspector saying that it was in place when you had an ANO AOC and the CAA promised that you could bring existing working practices into the new JAR Ops enviroment. Worked for me.The only modification required was to re-calibrate basic parameters from Imperial to Metric.
I believe the cost involved were fairly modest (32p) which includes a spare. I could let you have some of my spares if you have not already re-calibrated.

That's all well and good, but we all remember the spate of "incidents" and bankruptcy's among airlines when the environmentalists infiltrated the airlines and swapped said POS for Knicker elastic. There were DC-8's dropping into the sea off Sal Island by the dozen.

Not a risk I can afford to take in the current climate!

Yes Phil I do remember, but the DC8's were Ghana registered and the AOC (sic) holder refused to recalibrate, there is just no telling some folk That is precisely the reason the CAA insisted that the latested version of POS software was used that included the re-calibration.
PS I understand why we have not done an Istanbul Coventry charter for years, you can do it in 2 hours less than us!
