Maximum "out of date" period to renew CL604 TR on the Aircraft

Hello All
Impossible to speak to the FCL today, to ask the following question :

What is the maximum period after TR expiration to renew on the Aircraft ?

My CL604 Type rating is out since end of February, and am offered the possibility to renew on the aircraft soon. But I was told (!) I could only do that if within 3 months of expiry . I found some JAA french text about it. But as France is famous to adapt JAA rules, I want to make sure this also apply on my JAA (UK issued ) ATPL

Your help appreciated

Nicolas

Hi,

If I remember well, the maximum period within a single renewal could be done is 3 years. Inside this period a specific "renewall" course should be achieved to regain the TR.

Beyond this period of 3 years, a full inital course will be in force.

Regards Roljoe.

Under existing JAR-FCL1 rules, type ratings can be renewed within 5 years of the expiry date of the relevant rating. Beyond that period, application needs first to be made to the Licence Holder's National Authority to determine re-training requirements.

(However, proposed (draft) EASA Part FCL regs indicate that this latitude may be very significantly reduced in the future).

Hope this helps.

More than 5 years and the type is gone.

But if you are talking about your Licence renewal on type (LPC/IR) then you can renew it any time you like within the 5 years. The only difference will be the new expiry date.
If you renew within 3 months then the expiry date will be 12 calendar months (last day of the 12th month).
If you renew before the 3 months then the licence will be valid until the 12th calendar months from the months you renewed it. (you renew now, in may then your licence will be valid until the 31st of May 2010).
The same principle applies to your medical but instead of 3 months it is 45 days (and the validity date is the date at which you did your medical.

Type rating validation

A type can be revalidated/renewed in aircraft or approved simulator within 5 years of the expiry of the rating so in effect 6 years from the date of the last check ride. If a rating is renewed no more than 3 months early from the date of expiry the rating is valid to 12 months from the original expiry date. Also a quirk under British rules is that the rating is valid for 12 months from the end of the month only if the pilot works and has been tested by an AOC company. ie if test done 01 May 2009 it is valid until 31 May 2010. If the pilot works for a non AOC company the validity date would be 01 May 2010. This is a throw back to the 2 in 13 month base checks of ANO operations and was insisted on by Big Airways when JAR FCL's and JAR Ops came in. Do other countries have this anomoly?

After 6 years (5 + validity of rating) one has to contact the Authority for guidance. Not always will the authority insist on a completly new full course. They will judge each case on merit depending on circumstances. For instance some years ago I renewed my Tristar rating after a 15 year lapse. They asked for evidence of a ground school refresher and 3 sim rides plus check ride. Sadly after a 15 year lapse I still regarded the Tristar as a hopless aircraf or may be I am just eternally prejudiced as having flown the DC10 before the Tristar.
