Salt Lake City to Saint-Petersburg (Russia) Ferry flight
 

Hello! We need to execute the ferry flight Cessna-421 from SLC to SPb. What kind problem of formality part we will get in USA and Canada. Our crew is CPL holders (Russian)
PS By the time of the ferry flight we will register acft on RA-reg.

I believe that you will have to obtain a waiver from the U.S. TSA (Transportation Security Administration). This can be done on the internet and takes approximately 3-5 business days to obtain. You will receive the waiver number via e-mail.

The waiver can be valid for many weeks, so be sure to include enough time in the waiver request to give you flexibility. You will have to list all of the airports in your route that you may land at in the U.S. Be sure to include all possible airports that you may land at just in case you change your route because of weather or mechanical problems.

Hello! I have one more question. If we would buy this aircraft, can we fly to SPb with N-registration, and make deregistration after arrival to Saint-Petersburg? Is it lawful?

Yes, but you'd need a US licensed pilot. Do the de-registration once you get to Spb.

This sounds like your first time - my advice is to use the services of one of the many ferry companies out there - just Google "ferry+aircraft."

Exactly, it will be first time ferry flight from USA, but i have ferry flight experience from Europe to Russia. I need make it myself for getting airferryng experience from USA. I hope you understand me right.

Also if you do a search on pprune. There are some ferry pilots who visit here. Good luck, should be a fascinating experience. Allow plenty of time for the planning.

If, as I understand it, your intention is to export the aircraft (i.e., the aircraft will be registered in a different country later on) then you need to obtain a FAA Certificate of Airworthiness for Export.

This is a very easy process and the AOPA can help you with valuable information on how to obtain it (including information concerning the pre-purchase, safe purchase, FAA registration and other legal procedures to be followed).

I recommend that you become a member of AOPA, the $40 annual membership ($60 for Intl.) is well worth it for your intended ferry trip (it also include the monthly magazine AOPA Pilot which is the best one around). http://www.aopa.org

NB: IF you try to leave the country without a Certificate of Airworthiness for Export, AND IF Customs agents at the exit airport only suspect that the aircraft is intended for export, they will seize the aircraft!

As for the routing, I would avoid KBGR as your exit airport; and avoid Greenland as well.

My preferred routing would be CYZV-(CYQM)-CYYR-BIRK-ENZV and on to your destination.
or CYYT-BIRK-EGPC, etc. (BIRK is better than BIKF).

Or if WX is really bad in the North and stays that way, then CYYT-LPAZ-LFPN or ELLX, etc.

You will need a ferry fuel tank system (and a FAA Ferry Permit as well as a form 337). Some people do fly the route without an extra ferry fuel system. In my opinion it is not wise; if the WX closes down on you, say in (Greenland or) Iceland or anywhere in the north, then you will have nowhere to go.

Besides, the cost of the ferry fuel system will cost you less than the extra fees incurred with one or two more landings.

NB: Similarly, if you try to leave the country with a fuel ferry system in the aircraft, AND without a FAA form 337 & Ferry Permit, AND IF Customs agents find out, they WILL seize the aircraft!

NB: You need an Air Crew US visa if you are not US citizen.

NB: They can seize your acft for many other unwarranted reasons, that is why I recommend the AOPA Legal Service Plan. At least you'll get it back easily (still count 4 to 6 weeks) and at a lower cost:ok:

Check also, if still valid, when you land in Denmark (prior to landing at any other EU country) you will be granted a EU VAT exemption at no or very little cost. This could be quite worthwhile if you later plan to operate (or sell) the aircraft in the EU. In that case land at EKAH.


The ferry flight is no big deal but one needs to be fully prepared and fully understand the legal requirements (FAA documents, Customs, Canada permit requirements at CYQM, SAR Insurance requirements for Iceland, etc.), the aircraft fuel system, the weather, etc. And also understand the consequences. (FYI, I have flown many ocean crossing east and west bound solo).
