Damianik,

If you are assigned to the G5 upon joining then your "seat lock" is only for 12 months after line training. Given that upgrades are at least 2 years away, this will not put you at any disadvantage. If you bid to change to the G5 from another type then you are locked in for longer ( 4 or 5 years I think) which is what Mr Falconbis is referring to.

Its all in the ops manual and will be explained to you (as it was to me) at your INDOC.

With the incoming Falcon 7Xs and your experience level, maybe you will get lucky and get a 7X seat... That would be interesting to say the least.

No way, that is captain only for the first few months to get to know the bird..then seniority reserved?? of course unofficial news...

By the way, judging people by his posts in a non native language in a not-so-well known argument (never worked for the discussed company) with your maybe huge background of seen and unseen things is quite unfair...
i will get there eventually and in any case, i will pay for my own mistakes..

I have been on large cabin for quite a long time now and 12 month seat lock its a first to me :}, all the first officers, I have flown with even the one highly experienced and ready for upgrade after 6 months stay lock 24 months before to start the upgrade process. You may be right I haven t look at the first officer lock seat chapter in part A but I know the cost of paying a type rating on a long range aircraft and I cannot see how it will make sense to then pay again an upgrade course and a new type rating on the midsize fleet....so its may be in the book to give the Company options open in case they are short of Captain one day and need guys but believe me 24 months will be the absolute minimum, it s already 3 years on the 800 just to go to the upgrade course a fleet were you could be changing seat after 6 months !

I would agree that seat lock on the large cabin fleet is/was normally 24 months.

Where do you get your 12 months from Northern Boy, I scanned through the Part A but cant see anything, but I may well have missed it.

I have not receieved a CD with the 'Career Policy Manual' on it, just the memo sent out by the DFO, which I have read and cant see where it says 12 months.

This is edited from the handout I got during INDOC.

Seat Lock requirements for fleet changes:

GV/550 4 years (not 5, I was mistaken there)

note: The restrictions are not applicable to F/O's on their first assigned type and who are bidding for a captain position.


Group C/D (that includes the G5 and F2000/900) f/o's can bid for command on a group A/B type 1 year after initial line check.

Given current conditions the 1 year freeze is unlikely to disadvantage anyone joining on a large cabin type unless there is a sudden and dramatic expansion.I would be pleasantly suprised to see that.


I joined last August so the new information may be fairly recent. I think its on the ops policy CD.

Hi Falcon.

Not everybody within that large number of FO's has the required experience to bid for command, and with the dearth of flying at present, they won't be building up hours in a hurry either, so the numbers may not be as bad as they seem. Judging also by some of the previous postings quite a few may be looking for pastures new when things do pick up. Finally as I understand it, if the company need Captains in a hurry then seniority is not the only criterion. That of course may be a thing of the past now but there are still quite a few airframes on order and the larger ones with ULH capability often do augmented crew trips requiring 2 captains. I'm not sure of the exact crew/airframe ratio but under the present system there will still be a requirement for captains, which of course creates spaces in the smaller fleets. I still think it will be 2 years plus but you would be amazed at how fast time passes, especially when you are nearly 90 years old like me.

Yes fare point, but my initial answer was on large cabin F/O. NJE in the past gave the large cabin to low time or low experienced FO with a long term right seat and the experienced guys expected to upgrade rapidly the midsize.
