Johannesburg, which airport?

Hi Bizjet experts!

Need a quick word of advice about Johannesburg. 2-day trip flying in from Asia, which airport is the best choice, JNB or Lanseria, and why?

I appreciate the help as always...

Lansaria is the business airport, it's geared for that.

I'd use Lanseria, as I have many times.

The runway is 30 metres wide, with no shoulders. Looks and feels very narrow.

Generally OK to operate in and out of. Always used Execujet.

For a 2 day trip, I'd probably head into Sandton for a hotel. There is more to do. Montecasino is lovely, but it is a bit remote once you've settled in. There is a nice Sheraton in Sandton, as well as a Radisson BLU and the Sandton Sun. Large shopping mall and Nelson Mandela Square, which is chock full of restaurants - including the legendary Butchers Shop.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks gents!

It's now changed into a minimum-rest stop, so we'll stay close... But it'a definitely Lanseria and Execujet then...

I appreciate the quick and good responses

FALA

I used both airports, but our operation now prefers Lanseria and I'm happy about it.

The runway renovation project has been completed recently and RWY 07/25 shows now a width of 45m/148ft and useable length of 9829ft.

Keep in mind that there are two VOR-Approaches and a RNAV(GNSS) to RWY 07, but with different Minima depending on Missed Apch Climb Gradient.

Execujet Handling always works fine and due to the smaller size of the airport you get through Customs/Immigration/Security way faster.

Montecasino or Sandton are both fine, just a matter of personal preference.

InterContinental or Hotel Michelangelo (if your budget permits) in Sandton are my favourites.

Cheers,

Fuel is about a $1.80 more per USG at Lanseria than it is at ORT/JNB.

That's a factor to consider for most operations.

That's true, but you always can negotiate with them. Paying by Credit Card or Cash resulted in a significant discount.

For a quick stop I definitely would suggest the Hotel Montecasino, to waste less time on the road.

Indaba

Indaba Hotel is also quite popular with flight crew and close enough to the malls, etc... if you want to do shopping; but slightly away from it if you just need a good rest.

Is FALA still the recommended option of the 2 or FAOR preferred. Any opinions appreciated for upcoming trip planning

Used FAOR once, Menzies Handling. Long ways to and from the A/C.

We (crew) walked through intl. arrivals, I enquired about passport control / stamping / gendec stamping, was told not to worry, not necessary.

Next day we flew to Port Elisabeth, the immigration officer there wanted to put us into jail, cose we were technical illegally in the country....

Security screener was also very unpleasant, the black screener we had showed a distinct anti white bias and behaved like a mini hitler.

All in all an unpleasant experience.

Hotel (Interconti on the airport) and ATC top notch though.

Fireblade at FAOR are excellent, with dedicated terminal and customs, hangar and high level security.

Plan to avoid mid-late afternoon arrivals in summer, if you can. PROB40 CB with +TSRA, which often arrive and hold over FAOR/FALA for a good while. May cause annoying diversions or drawing a bunch of racetracks in the sky.
Early morning arrivals are best.
