City Airport Manchester (aka Barton)

From todays Manchester Evening News

Jet hub plan revealed
Chris Barry
4/ 3/2008

PEEL Holdings' airports division hopes to create Manchester's second commercial airport, at Barton. It has recently renamed Barton Aerodrome as City Airport, Manchester, and is hoping to make it a hub for business aviation.

Managing director Andrew Simpson said there was `no question' of the new facility rivalling Manchester airport, but it would complement services there.

He said "We are in discussions about making City Airport Manchester a business and general aviation airport. There has been a massive rise in business travel - executives using small corporate jets as they are quicker. Manchester airport is very busy with larger jets and international flag carriers, and it's not an effective use of its facilities to have small aircraft going through there."

Peel owns the land with Manchester city council and the plans hinge on how the development would be funded. Mr Simpson says: "We're at an early stage, assessing how to make it happen. It would need new facilities and a new runway. We believe the development of City Airport Manchester' is important from a regional point of view. If Manchester is going to be a world class business city it needs to have easily accessible facilities for scheduled carriers and also for smaller jets"

I wonder how Ocean Sky feel about that having just paid top dollar for Northern Exec, this will surely affect their handing and hangarage revenue.

Ocean Sky

Doubt, it will be ages yet before Barton is operational for Jets and Oceansky is always rammed, if anything it will help take the pressure off and keep biz levels at an optimum rather than fire fighting the demand

Oh poor Ocean Sky! Sure they will not miss some of those "annoying" little King Airs and Learjets!

Barton? The grass strip between the M62 west-bound and what used to be the M63? (I can't remember the new number).

They're calling that City Airport

Are they going to put a vending machine in the club house for pax convenience?

When I drove past that on my way out of the UK for the last time, around three years ago, it was closed due to fog. In fact, most of the times I drove past that, it was closed due to fog. Or rain. Or snow.

or Peel produce some nice plans, local councils turn them down, Peel say "we've spent all this money producing nice plans and now you've ruined our chances of making any money as an airport, so can we turn it into a shopping centre/retail park/industrial estate" local council say "oh, go on then..."

Dont think Peel will be interested in more retail at Barton, when they have the Trafford centre 1 mile away. The plans for Barton have been doing the rounds for years, Peel hopes for big things in this area, a new stadium, horse racing track etc, a decent biz runway will be integral to the success of these other ventures. There is no chance of anything business like operating into Barton with the state of its runways at present.

The new bizjet City Airport isn't likely to be on the existing site.

A new site has been looked for a new combined racecourse and airport.

We will see in time!!!

Peel airports own most if not all of the fields around Barton, and the electricity pylons can easily be buried underground. So all in all it's not an unrealistic idea....

Long way off yet though :-/

Them pesky pylons....

Surely it would be easier to scrap the pylons and just bury the cables underground?
