There are quite a few threads on this site (mainly in the private flying section) which explain in some detail how to do this.
It's actually very easy. That's the good news.
The bad news is that if you're off to the States next week, you've left it too late
Briefly you need to send a form to the CAA with some money. You then send off more forms to the FAA. The CAA contacts the FAA, who send you a letter within a few weeks telling you to make an appointment to collect your temporary FAA licence.
You won't be able to do all this by next week though.

To Save you trawling through all the threads. Here's the forms you need

They claim it takes 6 weeks to do. But I managed to get mine done in 2 weeks, but I had to beg the CAA to do it for me. The slowness is in the CAA! Suprised?!
The day I faxed over my forms to the FAA I called them to check they had them, I was fortunate to speak to nice lady and managed to get her to send the request off to the CAA for the info/confirmation while I was on the phone!, she told me as soon as the CAA replied she would call me and let me know when I could go to the FISDO office in the USA to pick it up.. Well the CAA took 10 days to process and return the form, and charged £35 for the luxury!
Good luck... Print the forms off tonight and get them sent off ASAP. You may stand a chance of getting it in a reasonable time..
